Guy Hunt is dead
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/2009/01/31/hunt_0131.html

Good riddance. Sorry, but this asshole made our State a laughingstock
even more than Wallace. Guy, please say hi to Reagan, Falwell, Wallace,
Connor, ad nauseum in hell. Damn I forgot Nixon-give him my regards.

1. I can't compare Wallace with Hunt.
Wallace did repudiate his early racist position, and enjoyed popularity among both black and white Alabamians until his death.

Guy Hunt was an uneducated, Primitive Baptist preacher, an Amway salesman, a huckster and crook who packed Alabama's public offices with Rethugs. He was removed from office for using state planes and taxpaper money to travel to paid preaching appearances. He's also responsible for first appointing Roy Moore to a judgeship.

2. I don't think Wallace ever believed any of that racist junk he spewed
When he was a judge he was known to be fairer than most Alabama judges toward black defendants and their lawyers. His ambition was bigger than his ethics, though, and he rode the racist bent of the electorate at that place and time into infamy.

Guy Hunt was relatively uneducated, but I don't hold that against him. The other ways you describe him are also true. He was a Primitive Baptist preacher. He was an Amway salesman. He was a huckster and a crook. I do hold those things against him. I was embarrassed for my state when Hunt appeared on national television sounding like Gomer Pyle from season one of the the Andy Griffith Show.

But I take no joy from his death.

3. I agree with you about Wallace.
He originally ran as fairly progressive but had a big streak of political expediency in him.

Guy Hunt was an embarrassment. I should have used "ignorant" rather than "uneducated." Posting in haste has its drawbacks.

Like you, I'm not pleased he's dead, and hope the post did not come across that way.

4. no, not at all
And I didn't mean to imply that.

It's just something that irritates the hell out of me about this website in general. I don't do grave dancing. I guess I could understand it when Reagan died. Still, I found it terribly distasteful. When Anna Nicole Smith died, I couldn't even begin to comprehend what brought about the revelry. But it was here.

I didn't mean to be critical of you in any way. Nor, of liberaltrucker, who is a great guy, by the way.

I guess it's just that any perceived celebration of death offends my bleeding-heart sympathies. ;)

5. The celebration of death is disturbing.
I was shouted down at a site very similar to this one for decrying the joyful swooning when Gerald Ford and William F. Buckley passed.

6. Guy Hunt serves a useful purpose reminding us not to blindly vote for a candidate because of party
affiliation.

Hunt is a historical embarrassment for Alabama Republicans.

Sadly what goes around, comes around and IMO we AL Dem's must guard against our own Guy Hint.

7. Same holds true for "Fop" James.
Almost a creepier tool, if that's possible.

Recall the "demonized" portraits of former governors he had removed from the mansion?
