Poll question: So, who do you like for governor?
On the Republican side, we have at least two certifiable lunatics, Roy Moore and Tim James. Roy Moore was pretty soundly rejected by the electorate last time around. And the never-elected-to-anything Tim James, running on his pathetic papa's name, seems to be a lost cause -- though I should never underestimate the stupidity of the typical Alabama voter.

I think Robert Bentley was one of my grandma's doctors, and I think she told once that he is a nice man, but I don't know much about him. Likewise with Bradley Byrne, Kay Ivey, or Bill Johnson.

The field is narrower on the Democratic side. As far as I know, the only candidates are Ron Sparks, the state Agriculture commissioner, and Congressman Artur Davis.

Davis impresses me with a deep intellect, and his acquaintance with the president couldn't hurt the state should he be elected. And it would delight me to see the crow-eating that would necessarily ensue among the rabid Alabama-bashers on this message board should we elect an African-American governor. However, Davis is a DLC-type Democrat (though, I'm not sure he's actually a member of that organization). Is it true that Davis is not a member of the Congressional Black Caucus? I read that somewhere.

I know very little about Ron Sparks, but from my limited knowledge of him, he seems a bit more liberal than Davis. Who would stand a better chance of beating a Republican in Alabama? A liberal white guy, or a moderate black guy?

I kind of wish Susan Parker would enter the race. I think in a three-way match-up with Sparks and Davis, she might do very well indeed.

1. Either Davis or Sparks would be fine with me, but...
there's no way in hell a Democrat will win in 2010. Most Alabamians are in full-blown teabag mode, and I figure they will vote as far to the right as they are able.
I would like to more about Sparks and Davis, though. Personally, I'd like to vote as far to the left as possible.

2. So are you in the state when you say this?
Just because they're anti-Obama doesn't mean their anti-Democratic, just anti-Obama. Bright and Griffith both led Obama by 20 points in their district. Folsom will probably be re-elected in a near landslide. Now, I prefer Sparks because Sparks is making gambling the highlight of his campaign and I think that this would help him in urban areas given that his base will be rural.

If Sparks could actually get Alabama to come out and campaign for him it might go a long way towards putting them into office

4. You must be a geezer like me.
I remember Shorty in his bashed in top hat, just flogging the hell out of that stuffed toy tiger at Alabama-Auburn games.
And his perennial campaigns for governor.
Welcome to DU.
:hi:
