What has gotten Colbert into an anti-Alabama snit?

I like Colbert. I think he's a genius. But what's with his sudden hatred of Alabama?

He's called Alabama "racist" on Wednesday and Thursday nights' program.

On Wednesday, he opened his show with the question "What's the state of racism in America?" Answering his own question, he said "I take Alabama."

On Thursday night, he was talking about the "beer summit" at the White House. Noting that all the participants chose brands of beer manufactured by foreign-owned companies, he argued that they should have chosen American-made beer... such as Alabama's own "Ku Klux Klager."

Doesn't his own home state, South Carolina, still fly the Confederate flag over their capitol? Governor Folsom got rid of ours in the early '90s.

Anyone know what has gotten Colbert in a snit over Alabama?

As long as I can remember, if someone has needed to pick a state to scapegoat for racism, there's Alabama sitting conveniently right up at the top of the list, alphabetically-- no need to go any further, I guess.
And, as most Alabamians haven't done much to prove otherwise, it's difficult to try to argue against it now.
I hate it, but, well, there you go.

Alabama is one of the top states I think of when i think of racist inbred assholes... though Georgia ranks a close second...

I grew up in Morgan County, the east side... My elementary/junior high was 100% white. We had a black family move to town when i was in 6th grade, they had a daughter a grade below me. After a week people representing the klan showed up at her house and told her parents they were not wanted, they moved less than a week later. Last year i was watching a documentary on the Klan and in it the went to a rally. Guess what the caption said at the bottom of the screen: KKK Rally, Union Hill, Alabama. My elementary/junior high was Union Hill elementary. The rally was next to our playground and where we could go pee during football practice. I actually walked out into the big cleared circle that was in the doc once when I went to pee in 5th grade, yes we had to use the woods.

But it's been out of business for at least thirty years. And the SPLC sued the pants off the outfit down around Mobile in the '80's. So it's gone too. As far as I know, there's no real, organized KKK outfit in the state today.

I was wondering if there was something going on this week that would lead Colbert to do the "Alabama is racist" stuff two nights in a row. I figured something must've ticked him off. Especially since, at least when it comes to Confederate flags flying over state capitols, Alabama is 16 years, and counting, ahead of South Carolina.

He was the local grand dragon or whatever when I was at the U.

Can't we get someone to take on that sack of garbage? Siegelman would have been the one. Maybe Susan Parker could try again.

Susan Parker should be the governor or the senator, period, full stop, and I am not saying that because I campaigned for her and she lives 7 miles SE of me! PhDs make excellent Democratic senators and governors: Woodrow Wilson, Paul Wellstone, and Bernie Sanders come to mind. They make crappy Republican politicians and pundits, though: Kissinger, Kristol, Newt, and Gramm come to mind immediately.

Tiny quibble, though. Bernie Sanders isn't a Democrat. He's even better -- a socialist. ;)
