Hoover files lawsuit against Love Stuff shop over state law
http://www.al.com/search/index.ssf?/base/news/1106129707211080.xml?birminghamnews?nmet

"The suit, filed Friday in Jefferson County Circuit Court, seeks a declaratory judgment that the store violates a law prohibiting the operation of an adult-only enterprise within 1,000 feet of worship, day-care centers and private residences. The city's complaint cites two places of worship, a day-care center and 50 private residences within 1,000 feet of Nancy's Love Stuff."

Yep, the city's practically bankrupt and just cut education funding by 76%, but this is how they choose to spend their time and money.

Funny how they go after the small independent business, but they leave the big chains like Victoria's Secret and Spencer's Gifts alone.

I guess Nancy's Love Stuff should just consider themselves lucky, though. The last "unwelcome" business that tried to open in Hoover (a bistro that was reputed to cater to a gay clientele) was burned to the ground before it even opened.

2. sounds like a lovely town
NOT!

I read the other day that some guy out west who ran a chain of sex shops which he changed to Christian Book Stores after getting religion had just filed for bankruptcy.

4. Actually
There are lots of very nice people here, and I have enjoyed living here. However, the rightward shift has sped up in the last year or two, and it's becomming more and more uncomfortable.

7. hi Liz
I was thinking you lived in the T'Town area, like me.

Anyway, I live not that far from an "adult novelties" shop that's off the beaten path... well, kind of, it's on the interstate, but away from the heart of town. As far as I know, they haven't been harassed by the law, and judging from the cars out front, looks like they do a pretty good business. They have a sign that says you must be at least 18 to enter. I haven't gone in there, but I've started to several times, just to see what all they sell. Conservatives used to profess that they want "to get the government off your back," but I guess they've completely dropped that ludicrous pretense by now. Sigh.

Today's "conservatives", well, the absolute last thing they believe in is individual liberty... unless it's the liberty of zillionaires to steal from the less well-off. I truly hate them, and I don't take that word lightly.

8. Hi, Syrinx!
:hi:

I'm just up the interstate from you! We've been trying to find a time to take the kids down to T Town to see a basketball game soon.

I think our new mayor and city council have targeted this shop because they've just come into office and are trying to make a name for themselves with the christian conservatives. They are masters at pandering. :eyes:

Apparently business is good at Nancy's Love Stuff. I haven't been in either, but I may have to go by just to offer moral support.

9. b'ball's going nicely isn't it?
On the local news recently, they were interviewing some young lady named "Liz" and her last name began with "W." Can't remember what it was now. But she was giving the Republicans hell about something or other, and I remember wondering if that was you.

Gottfried and his team are on a roll now. I hope we get to the final four this year... at least. ;)

3. Separation of Church & State.
Why special laws/remedies for "places of worship"?

5. Good question
I hope Nancy's has a good lawyer, because I think there might be a chance of getting the law declared unconstitutional.

First of all, the store is only an "adults only" business because the owner voluntarily decided to make it so. It's not "adults-only" by law, like a strip club.

Also, the "place of worship" the city council is referring to is the chapel in a nursing home that is owned by one of the city councilmen, not an actual church.

And most important, there are other businesses in the city that display provacative clothing much more prominently where children can see it. Victoria's Secret, for instance, had rhinestone encrusted thong underwear in their window in the mall all through the holiday season. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) ;)

The law in question seems to punish Nancy's for refusing to admit anyone under 18, while other stores sell the same stuff and don't restrict children from entering.
