Kudos to John Tracey, Director of NBC, Channel 2 Anchorage!
Doesn't sound like John wants to take anymore of our lousy R-Governor's crap. Like the majority of Alaskans, he's fed up with him too!!!

Governor shows he wants lapdogs, not watchdogs, as Capitol reporters

It is a little disconcerting to read a letter from the governor characterizing one of our reporters as being rude, offensive and unprofessional ("Professional journalists can see me, but those who behave badly cannot," May 29). On May 11, at the first and only press conference of the special session, Channel 2 News correspondent Bill McAllister and others, now "blacklisted," had the temerity to ask follow-up questions of the governor. The governor apparently feels that any answer to a question is sufficient regardless of its proximity to the question that was asked.

It is evident that we see the function of a Capitol correspondent differently from the administration. What it calls editorializing, we call analysis and context. What it wants is a lapdog, while our viewers demand a watchdog. Remember, this is an administration that considers its own flacks to be journalists.

Frankly, this is an administration that has worked hard to discredit those reporters whom it dislikes. It has done so by complaining to the reporter's supervisors, by attempting to make public areas of the Capitol off-limits, and by denying access to public information. Finally, it has resorted to personal insults in a letter to the newspaper.

I do agree with the governor: Alaskans are entitled to a professional press corps that does quality reporting. I know at least one such reporter who will be back next year. At least we now know where we stand. Outside.

1. Make 'em howl!
Right on larissa. Governor Frank, like Governor Wally, has to be kept in the spotlight at all times. We need more men and women like John Tracy who will call him on the endless procession of bad decisions pouring out of Juneau. Mike Doogan, won't you consider coming out of retirement? That guy could really make those barbarian Republicans howl.

3. Right on!
And Bill McAllister is one of my journalistic heroes.

If there is ever a Watergate in Alaska, Bill is the one who will
uncover it.
