This event was hosted by the "Band of Sisters". There were four women present who spoke about their relatives who had been or are going to be in Iraq.
The first woman spoke about her brother who has returned safely. She told about many of the problems over there. Her brother had also been to Afghanistan and this lady told how her family had supported Bush throughout that war and leading up to the Iraq invasion. She then gave a moving account about how George W. will not admit to a mistake. She then cried as she said she was there to admit her own mistake - voting for George Bush in 2000.
The second woman told a story about her husband noticing soldiers with worn-out boots. She was saying that our soldiers are not getting what they need - even things as simple as boots.
The third woman told about how her daughter had given up dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship after 9-11 to join the army. She was distraught that her daughter would be sent to Iraq and that the war was meaningless.
The fourth woman spoke about her husband and how wonderful he was. She then told about his death. She said she was only able to identify his body by the wedding ring on his finger.
Lord, I tell you, those women were wrenching. I cried right along with every single one of them. The one who spoke about the boots cried nearly uncontrollably throughout the whole thing.
Wes then spoke about the mistake of the war. He spoke about how George W. had chosen to ignore all the warning signs prior to 9-11. He spoke about nationl security and how John Kerry is a strong person.
Wes took questions from the audience. There were some very good questions concerning our armed services and Iraq.
One of the "Band of Sisters" asked him to address the issue of them being called unpatriotic for speaking out. His first response was that he didn't know that the U.S. was a dictatorship. He told again how it is our duty to speak out against things we don't agree with.
He finished with a plea for each of us to go out and speak with five undecided voters and take Arkansas for John Kerry.
We spoke with Wes afterward and thanked him for continuing to fight for us. He said just what he has said many, many times - "Well, you know, for me, this was never personal. It has always been about our country." I told him that I know that. He thanked me for wearing my Clark04 shirt along with my Kerry-Edwards buttons and my "WesClark Democrat" pin. I told him we have been and will continue working right along with him.
The best part about this is that I convinced my dad to go. He has been "on the fence" lately because of a freeper consultant who has been spending alot of time at his office. As my daughter said, "If this don't get him back off the fence and onto our side, nothing will."
