Ark. Votes Against Church-State Proposal
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/wire/sns-ap-church-and-state,0,4924875,print.story?coll=sns-ap-nation-headlines

Here are excerpts, and they are chilling. This information needs to be spread far and wide.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The state House on Friday voted against affirming the separation of church and state in a resolution brought by a legislator who said he was fed up with a religious undertone at the Capitol.

The House voted 44-39 against the proposal. Only two Republicans voted for it, and one of them, Rep. Jim Medley, said he had intended to vote no but didn't get to his machine in time to change his vote.

"It's unbelievable to me. They have just voted against the U.S. Constitution and the constitution of the state of Arkansas," Blair said.
snip

"It's clear that our founding fathers, that they wanted Christian beliefs," Lamoureux said. "The separation of church and state is not in our Constitution."

2. Are you surprised?
The Bill of Rights was approved to keep the MAJORITY in line. Any time a provision of that bill comes up for a vote, the MAJORITY will find it onerous and vote against it. That's the POINT!

Keeping the minority safe from the tyranny of the majority is what those amendments are all about. If they were POPULAR, they wouldn't be needed!!!

3. What you said may be true,
but the fact that the Arkansas legislators seem to think that the Constitution doesn't include the First Amendment, and that Unitarian John Adams and deist Thomas Jefferson were establishing a "Christian nation" is extremely worrisome to me. They are re-writing history and saying, in effect, that the Constitution is superfluous.

4. what exactly does this change?
so they voted against affirming the separation of church and state.... is that simply showing that they dont support it, or does it actually change anything at all? Dont get me wrong, this is very disturbing, although not all that surprising. Is there any way that they could abolish the separation of church and state within the state? I thought the bill of rights was designed to protect the local minority, so that the majority could not change those rights.

5. I wouldn't be surprised what they do
They already have "covenant marriage" on the books, which, I believe, makes it legally impossible to get a divorce except in cases of severe abuse or infidelity. Huckabee and his wife recently took their vows again as a covenant marriage, which made a big splash here.

There are some real religious nutcases in this state, and I wouldn't be surprised WHAT they tried to do next. That's why this information should be disseminated and concerned folks in Arkansas should let their state legislators know how they feel.

7. This state is almost getting to scary for me to stay here. But I have
seen this same trend in several other states. It looks to me like we are headed for a new Victorian Age where anyone who is different or disagrees is run out of town.
