Who will replace Chris Cox in the U.S. House?

Is his district too heavily Republican, or is there a chance that a Democrat could take it?

This is the real O.C. we're dealing with here--Newport Beach, Irvine, etc. In that part of Orange County Democrats don't win elections.

Ackerman wants Cox's seat

State Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman became an early favorite to succeed Rep. Christopher Cox, as Ackerman stated his intention Thursday to run for the coveted GOP seat if Cox is confirmed as Securities and Exchange Commission chair man.

Of the other well-known Republicans, none had made a definitive decision to run Thursday. Those seriously considering a bid included former Rep. Robert K. Dornan and former Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer. Assemblyman and former county Supervisor Todd Spitzer didn't rule out a run.

The district is among the most Republican in the country, with GOP voters holding a broad advantage over Democrats and GOP donors among the nation's wealthiest and most generous.

Spitzer said it's premature to discuss a congressional run. Mark Chapin Johnson, a North Tustin multimillionaire who was prepared to run four years ago when Cox was being considered for a judgeship, said he had the money for an expensive self-funded campaign - but wasn't sure if he still had the passion.
