Governor to skip UC Merced kickoff

There will be one very noticeable notable missing from class next week when UC Merced makes its grand opening -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Much to the puzzlement of the new UC's boosters, the governor's office has notified campus officials that he has other plans for Labor Day, when opening ceremonies will be held.

A spokeswoman in the governor's office told us Tuesday that Schwarzenegger's staff was working on scheduling a visit to the campus sometime in the future -- just not Monday.

I'm sure he'll visit for a fundraiser or something equally important

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, apparently stung by criticism over his decision to skip the grand opening of the new UC Merced campus, says he plans to visit the campus today for a tour.

During the hastily arranged tour, which the governor's staff announced Wednesday, Schwarzenegger will meet with professors, students and Chancellor Carol Tomlinson-Keasey and walk around the campus.

The governor had drawn criticism for saying he would skip the grand opening of the first new UC campus in 40 years, scheduled for Monday.

2. I'm happy we have a new UC campus.
As a UC alumni I am always happy to see that the state government is filling in the holes left by the feds and are increasing the availability and access to higher education for young Californians.
