Pessimism reigns in California

By Tom Chorneau, Associated Press
Long Beach Press Telegram

SACRAMENTO — Anxious over the hurricane disasters on the Gulf Coast and rising gas prices here at home, a majority of California voters are growing increasingly pessimistic about the direction of the state and the nation, according to a new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California.

Most voters said they are bracing for bad economic times and see no solutions in the slate of ballot measures that are set to be decided in the November special election.

(snip)

The poll found that most voters 53 percent continue to believe the upcoming Nov. 8 election is a bad idea. A third of voters said they are not following news of the election closely. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who called the election and helped qualify three measures for the ballot, also is suffering: Just 38 percent of likely voters said they think he is doing a good job.

(snip)

The poll was based on telephone interviews with 1,013 likely voters during the seven day period ending Sept. 19. It had a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

1. I'm out there talking to California voters.
In my neighborhood, Schwarzenegger's popularity rating is down to about five percent, give or take a little. Lots of teachers, nurses, etc. live around here, and they really can't stand him.
