Secretary of state announces new requirements for electronic voting machines

Wednesday, October 5, 2005

(10-05) 17:47 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

Secretary of State Bruce McPherson announced new requirements for electronic voting machines Wednesday and said he would create a unit in his office to test and certify the machines.

"We must take these fundamental steps to guarantee public confidence in our voting process," McPherson said in a speech to the California Black Chamber of Commerce.

He laid out 10 requirements that the machines must meet for use in California elections, starting in 2006, including approval by an independent testing unit certified by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.

California law already requires the machines to provide so-called paper trails to assure voters that their votes were accurately recorded.

2. It is worst than that, Certain Democrats made sure that Mr. Kevin Shelley
Edited on Wed Oct-05-05 09:00 PM by mrdmk
was set-up to leave office. These Democrats (there is a list) were bought and paid for by Diebold. I will try and find the list.

9. Abuse of power?
Hmmm. I don't see any headlines about his horrible abuses. Maybe the prosecution is timing out to look for Nicole Simpson's real killer.

Where IS the Chronicle now -- looks like they lost interest the second he resigned. What a coincidence.

Goodbye, vote.

13. My point is, there was no abuse of power.
Shelley was targeted because of his stance on the voting machines. Sure, maybe he was a sh3tty boss, but this was a political hit.

As soon as he stepped down, all the concerns about him magically disappeared.

You want to vote in California? Notice that the people who want to secure the vote are hounded. Like Kevin Shelley.

Think Ohio and Florida and notice, they're gunning for California.

14. Yes it was a political hit
The reason it was here in California was because 1) Diebold machines were de-certified due to breaking down, incorrect vote count, unauthorized software, security concerns and etc. 2) California tends to be first to set the standard for the rest of the country (which did happen in this instance).

In any case the changes that Kevin Shelly made did stick. Besides, not everybody who had to deal with him hated him, just some people. I have a feeling he did not deal with B.S. very well and did not have the patience for it (I do the same myself). Los Angeles did change their voting machine, I do not know what happened in Riverside other than the smuck Ms. Townsend retired. This shows that Kevin Shelly was not completely out of line!

Also I like to mention that Diebold is in deep do-do with their stockholders. If Diebold does go down the tubes this will be a problem for the government more ways than one. The Banking industry will be stuck with their ATM's.

15. I had this pipe dream that we'd all boycott ATMs after the
last stolen election.

Let's see how we do. :)

Mr. Shelley was not the best of people, but far from the worst

We also need to remember this was during the post 2004 election and the state of being here in California. Also the media was no help!

The pre-election and exit polls are very close to the election results.

8. On the state average, yes. However,
There were some significant differences between exit polls and reported results in a few counties. Ventura is the only one I remember, but there were two more with large differences and, I think, three others with smaller but statistically significant differences.
