Magic Johnson endorses Angelides for California governor

By: Associated Press

SACRAMENTO -- Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson endorsed state Treasurer Phil Angelides for governor Tuesday, saying California needs a change in leadership.

"Phil Angelides has the business experience, the proven leadership skills and the vision to be a great governor," Johnson said during a news conference at a theater complex he owns in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. "As governor, Angelides will renew opportunity for Californians so we can have the best schools, the best colleges and the best chances for our children."

Angelides is one of two Democrats to announce their candidacy for governor next year, seeking the right to challenge Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has been endorsed by several prominent party leaders, including U.S. senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez of Los Angeles. State Controller Steve Westly is the other announced Democrat.
