Feinstein re-election race should be piece of cake
WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein can expect a walk in the park next year, even as her fellow Democrats are slogging uphill.
Feinstein's re-election prospects now appear closer to a romp than a race, with the decision this week of a well-to-do Los Angeles businessman not to run against her. Software company executive Bill Mundell's departure leaves the GOP field clear — disconcertingly so, for Republicans.

"At this point, there is no candidate that's emerged," California Republican Party spokeswoman Karen Hanretty said. "Clearly, there is still time, but this will be a very challenging race."

To say the least.

1. I don't want her to have a piece of cake
she needs a progressive challenger in primaries, if not to defeat her, to put her on notice and make her listen to voters more than her pocketbook.

4. Medea Benjamin could make her squirm in debates
most Dems probably won't go against her.

5. You're assuming that Feinstein would even aknowledge Benjamin's
campaign and agree to debate. Rather than do that and give free publicity, she may simply ignore her opponent.

6. Benjamin knows how to get publicity and can't be ignored.
Feinstein will make the bland Chamber of Commerce approved speeches, and if Benjamin got covered at all, it would force her to talk about real issues.

12. Highest third party candidate is kind of like being
the tallest midget. You still aren't going to get a contract with the NBA.

8. I often disagree with Feinstein
but I will focus on getting rid of Arnold as governor. IMO getting rid of Feinstein is a luxury, other races are much more important. Plus, I think Feinstein will win.

18. She did oppose Roberts
As conservative as Feinstein sometimes is, she seems committed to protecting the Supreme Court from a right wing takeover.

16. Cindy running is an
interesting prospective, Lord knows she would get the progressive vote. It would also help position her to address the war from a place of power.

17. A two-pronged approach would be best...

Sheehan should run as a *real* Democrat, challenging Feinstein in the primary.

After that's over, and we see just how much of the anti-war primary vote Cindy's able to draw away from pro-war Dianne, Benjamin (or perhaps Peter Camejo) should challenge Feinstein in the general election. I predict that one place progressives won't worry about the spoiler effect is in California, especially since the narrowing field of Republican challengers leaves virtually 0.000000000000000000000000000001% risk of any GOPhers coming anywhere close to beating her (as if there were much of any to begin with... California becomes more and more Democratic with every successive year and Feinstein is simply loaded with campaign cash (much of which she got from her ill-gotten deals with warmongering corporations, not the least of which is the one her husband works for), so third party candidates can go after Feinstein with a passion (as they should).

I also think that California progressives are ready to reward the Greens for taking the high road and not running someone against Barbara Boxer, and are willing to put their energy behind firing a warning shot across the bow of the increasingly Repub-lite Feinstein.

19. Your post is very insightful....I too like Camejo and voted for
him instead of Bustamonte for Governor.

As much as I didn't want Arnold to win, I couldn't bring myself to vote for Bustamonte.

Great post and ideas!!
