Long-targeted Boxer nervously enjoying lead in Senate race

Facing her third run for the U.S. Senate, Barbara Boxer is finding herself in an unfamiliar position: the heavy favorite to win re-election.
Polls show her well ahead of Republican challenger Bill Jones, despite a history of closely fought campaigns and Boxer's enduring status as an outspoken liberal Republicans love to hate. She also enjoys a wide financial advantage over California's former secretary of state.
Even so, the 64-year-old Boxer is running as if her life depended on it.
"I never ever take elections for granted. Californians are very independent and you have to win their votes," Boxer said in an interview. "I don't believe the polls. I think the race is closer. I just have to fight with every fiber of my body."
