LA County to hold taggers' parents liable for graffiti
Source: Associated Press

Beginning next month, parents can be held liable if their children are caught tagging property in Los Angeles County.

The county Board of Supervisors approved the graffiti ordinance Tuesday. Supervisor Gloria Molina says the measure is a "wake-up call" to parents and will strengthen the county's pilot anti-graffiti program.

The ordinance will go into effect Sept. 18 and will allow the county to sue to recover costs of removing graffiti. The county can also recoup unpaid damages by placing a lien on the property of a tagger's parent.

1. Parents won't let you go to the concert? Here's a novel way to pay 'em back...
A well-intentioned law, but I see trouble on the horizon.

4. They've done that for a while here in NM
and there's been an appreciable drop in tagging.

Most parents put the kid to work to pay it off doing...graffiti removal!

That's how they work off the cost.

That plus locking up all the spray paint has helped a lot around here.

2. Another way to make the poor, poorer.
Since those parents are probably single women working two to three jobs to feed their children, there probably isn't much supervision to begin with. I can't see how this will stop the taggers. The problem is so much deeper and would require the effing Board of Supervisors to actually study the real problem. But they have always been a bunch of asses even when I live in LA County.

and I'm not feeling too empathetic about the unfortunate situations in life that excuse their behavior. Chew your foot off, punk.

5. Since when has reasoning become excuses?
Not everybody was able to channel their problems into painting the Mona Lisa like yourself.

6. I have often thought
That they should only sell spray paint for those who have a business license and use it at their business. Or you can register if you use it a lot at home. How many people here have a can in their garage that is years old and 3/4 full? I know it's a bit excessive but graffiti is so ugly and it cost so much to clean it up.
