California governor vetoes Harvey Milk bill

Tue Sep 30, 11:58 PM ET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill that would have made the birthday of gay political icon Harvey Milk a statewide "day of significance."

In his veto message issued Tuesday, the governor said that while he respected the measure's intent, he thinks Milk's "contributions should continue to be recognized at the local level."

Conservative groups had lobbied Schwarzenegger not to sign the legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Mark Leno of San Francisco.

Milk became the nation's first openly gay man to hold a prominent political office when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

He and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by a fellow supervisor in 1978.

I know hating isn't a progress activity but I can't help it. I hope this veto haunts this POS for the rest of his useless life. Harvey WILL get his day. And this POS will be remembered as the reactionary whore he really is.

2. I can't find a copy anywhere.
The CCPOA has the notice of intent on their website, but not a cancellation or any news about a recall effort. I dug through their blog archives thinking there might be an update, but nada.

I'm thinking I might call their office monday and ask what's up. If they do have paper copies ready to go, I'll go pick up a stack (their main office is in West Sac, so it's not terribly inconvenient) and mail them out to anybody who wants one.

5. I'm thinking they don't have approval from the Secretary of State's office yet to circulate it.
They have to file intent, post a notice in a general circulation paper, wait for his response (if any,) submit their petition, get approval for it (that all the wording and formatting is acceptable) and only then can they circulate it. I can totally see that taking a month.

But I'll call and check, because that's just my guess from reading the procedures. I can't see any update on status at either their website or Bowen's.
