Driving to San Francisco- need help with directions
I'm coming from Los Angeles on wednesday.

Yahoo maps tells me to get off the 5 N to 152 then the 101. Would it be quicker to take 152 to 280 and go in that way?

My ultimate destination is the Sunset District.

thanks! :hi:

1. What is 152 and what time on Wednesday?
There is a cutoff from 101 to 280 by the airport. Sometimes, 101 can be faster if not as scenic. :hi:

3. We are going to try and leave LA by 9 which probably means 10
so we'd get there around 4 PM? I know...bad time.

Maybe since both Yahoo and Mapquest say 101 I should take them up on that?

But scenic is good too...

9. Okay. I'd take 101. There is a cutoff just after SFO.
Edited on Mon Nov-24-08 04:41 PM by sfexpat2000
You cut over and you're on 280.

That dumps out onto 19th Avenue.

If you want to turn right, you're cool. If you need to turn left, you need to take a San Francisco left, and turn right 3Xs.

If you have any trouble, pm me. I'm in the outter Sunset. :hi:

and I agree with Creek Dog -- the best route depends on the time of day.

19. yeah, take 152 to 85N and then to 280N exit 19th avenue
Edited on Mon Nov-24-08 06:21 PM by CreekDog
you should be okay. 280N from Millbrae/San Bruno to SF City Limit is typically backed up between 530-630pm on weeknights. Wednesday should be okay. If it's bad just get off at Avalon/Westborough in South S.F. and stay on Junipero Serra to the city (but only if it's really bad, otherwise it won't save you time).

I find holiday traffic on I-5 to be a nightmare, so I always take 99 instead. There are more places to stop, more lanes and it's a more pleasant drive. I think on balance it saves me time. You just have to figure out where you cross the valley to get over to I-5 or the Bay Area (I usually do Los Banos).

Drive safe! :hi:

152 does not intersect 280. Take 101 North to 280 North (you will drive right by my house so be sure to honk)

280 turns into 19th Ave in the city and that is pretty much the Eastern end of the Sunset. 19th goes through S.F. from South to North all the way to the GG bridge. The Streets run East to West and the Avenues run South to North. Good Luck.

BTW 101 will take you Downtown on the opposite side of the city and if you don't know your way around you won't enjoy the downtown traffic

14. It isn't really. You stay on 101.
When you get to the airport, you look for signs that say 380. That will take you from 101 over to (mostly parallel) 280 which is closer to the coast.

280 will take you right into town on 19th Ave.

On 19th, you can't turn left. So, when you get to Taraval, go one more block to Santiago and turn right. Go around the block and then back down on Taraval. Voila! You have made a San Francisco left!

Your destination is about half a mile from this table. :)

I have to get a pie and rolls to bring to dinner thursday and have to pick them up when we get to san fran. Of course we can just get them at the supermarket but if there is another option...

The bigger Safeways have good baked goods. I wouldn't go to the one closer to your destination (it's smaller) but to the one out by me on Marina. It's only about 5 minutes away and their selection is usually very good.

The only bakeries I can think of otherwise are strictly donuts or Asian.

IMO the best in the area are Noble Vegetarian on College Oak in Foothill Farms and Udipi Cafe on Sunrise in Rancho Cordova. If the weather co-operates, Sunflower Drive-in in Fair Oaks is a good place to go because there's a nice little park next door where you could take the grandbaby.

I also love brunches at the Fox and Goose (downtown on R). Who'd think a pub would have so much vegan food?

12. Bullshit on Yahoo.
You can pick up 280 in San Jose (approx 45 min north of 152/101) When you get to the city about another 45 min) follow yahoo to 19th Ave. 19th ave. intersects Taravel. 19th is 30 mph, timed lights. Turn left (always a good thing.) to 30th Ave. If you follow Yahoo straight to 30th you will have continuous stop signs all the way to Taravel instead of timed lights.

20. you can take 101N all the way to the city, then go west on 280 (which is actually South) a few exits
exit Monterey Blvd. from 280 South which takes you to the Sunset District.

Overall the most likely way to avoid traffic is (once you get past San Jose):

280 N to San Bruno
380 E
101 N to SF
280 S (just a couple of miles) to Monterey Blvd.

it sounds crazy but that avoids bottlenecks at 380W, 280N to the city and 101N around Redwood City to San Mateo.

16. Longer but faster
280 N. at rush hour + 70mph. 101, either direction at rush hour = parking lot. You are correct about Left off of 19th though. You would have to overshoot Taravel and loop back around the block.

101 was usually a better deal even if not by much. 280 is by no means clear sailing at rush hour.

17. 152 can be a parking lot on the holidays
I've seen traffic backed-up for miles before and after Thanksgiving. 5 can be stop-and-go also.

Honestly, I'd consider 101 all the way to 280. It's longer but the drive is prettier than 5 and you avoid 152.

From North Bay Wine Country it's about 30 to 45 minutes longer to take 101. Our L.A. destination is usually Thousand Oaks.

31. I would take I5 to 580 West
Once on 580 it's a straight shot to the Bay Bridge.

152 is used if you're going to Monterey and it will take-up an extra 45 minutes of your time just to get on 101 which is heavy traffic all the time.

Btw if you get to 580 after 10am you'll miss rush hour traffic.

Taking the 5 to the 580 West is the best way to get to the City from LA. Done the drive many times, and the only reason to take the 101 or 1 (if you've got absolutely nothing better to do) is for the views and scenery.

The 5 is blah, but hey! at least you get to drive by Harris Ranch!! Woo-hoo!!:bounce:

It was rainy on the way up the 5- I hate driving in that kind of weather. Also lots of accidents so lots of crawling. We left LA at 9:30 and got to the Sunset District at around 6:30. (we stopped several times)

The Sunset District is a very nice neighborhood.

We went over to Sacramento the next morning and stayed till Sunday. It took about 10 hours to get back to LA.

I'm not thinking of doing this trip by car again any time soon and definitely not on a holiday weekend.

Here is a picture of me with my step-grandson. He made it all worthwhile!
