New Survey USA/KPIX CBS 5 Poll Shows
Lt. Governor John Garamendi with Double Digit Lead
in 10th Congressional District Special Primary Election

Poll Results Parallel Internal Garamendi for Congress Polling Results

WALNUT CREEK – A newly released Survey USA poll commissioned by KPIX CBS 5 finds Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi holds a double digit lead over other Democrats in the 10th Congressional District special primary election.

The poll of likely voters found that 26 percent favor Garamendi, 15 percent favor State Senator Mark DeSaulnier, 12 percent favor Assemblymember Joan Buchannan, 5 percent favor Anthony Woods, and 11 percent are undecided. Last Sunday, the Garamendi campaign released internal polling by Tulchin Research that also showed Garamendi with a double digit lead.

“This poll confirms that voters want a proven leader to represent them in Washington, who is prepared to hit the ground running on day one and join President Obama in the fight to fix our healthcare system, put our economy back on track, and protect our environment,” said Garamendi. “Going into the final stretch, we continue to hold a solid lead and maintain a strong financial advantage. But we take nothing for granted; our growing team of volunteers is working hard every day to ensure we have a strong finish.”

+ Internal polling released by the Garamendi campaign among Democrats and decline-to-state voters. No other polls have been released by candidates or third parties since Garamendi entered the race.

According to the Survey USA poll, Garamendi’s lead is well outside the survey’s margin of error. Furthermore, the Lieutenant Governor is ahead of his nearest Democratic rival by 10 points among Democrats and independents, which is the identical margin in the Tulchin Research poll conducted on behalf of the Garamendi campaign.

The Lieutenant Governor has a strong lead among Obama voters, both men and women, liberals and moderates, and voters of every ethnicity. He also draws the most support among Republican voters of any of the Democratic candidates. In sum, Garamendi’s large lead and broad-based support put him in the best position of all the candidates to win this Congressional seat in the special election.

Garamendi has been endorsed by former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, California’s teachers and nurses, the Sierra Club, the California Labor Federation and dozens of other local leaders, unions, and community organizations, because of his commitment to reforming our healthcare system, standing up for consumers, investing in education as a tool for economic development, and protecting the Delta.

800 registered voters were interviewed by SurveyUSA between August 10, 2009 and August 11, 2009. Of the registered voters, 552 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the September 1, 2009 primary or to have already cast a ballot. The poll had a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percent.

2. He's a good man, and experienced.
He won my heart back when he was still Insurance Commissioner.

I heard him give a talk in which he described the wastefulness and inefficiency of the workers' compensation system, and how scrapping that and folding it into universal health care would be a far better solution all around, to say nothing of getting "more bang for the buck."

I've paid attention and been a fan ever since, and he hasn't disappointed. He'll be a fine Congressman!

5. Woods is very impressive.
Even he probably didn't expect to win on this first try, but I'm betting he wins at least a State seat before long -- and California certainly needs him.

Wherever he starts in public office, I believe he's got a long, bright career ahead of him and will accomplish much.

6. I'll be working the phone lines on Wednesday
Even though I'm not in the 10th District, I'm a huge JG supporter. I've followed his career for years, but after having the opportunity to work for him at the Department of Insurance, as well as with his wife Patti, at Trade and Commerce, you find out that these folks are the real deal. They have both dedicated their lives to public service.
