what percentage is unemployment in CA?
My company is closing, but is starting another business, and has offered some to stay on as contractors. Is there any benefit to staying on as a contractor?

1. My 'boss' did this last year...
you basically become your own boss but usually they expect you to perform just the same... the kicker is you have to pay taxes quarterly and get your own healthcare, in fact healthcare is a major reason some companies do this they now longer have to pay half of your medicare etc...

It is very good for the employer, ok for the employee but individual plans are really expensive for healthcare, plus make sure the terms of the contract are good, that there be notice of termination of contract etc.

2. so if anyone opts for this, before applying for unemployment
would they loose the ability to file for it IF the contract does not work out?

3. I'm not sure on that
but I think you still have some options if you loose the contract, but I have not had to go through that yet
