Too bad about Cynthia Matthews
I thought she really had a chance. I guess the enormous war chest of Dave "the closet gay" Drier was just too much for her to overcome.

1. It would have been nice...
if the Democratic Party gave her a token amount of funding.

I have never seen such an uprising of bipartisan support to oust a candidate and yet, the party sold her down the river.

Dreier, one of the most powerful GOPers in the nation, had the toughest battle of his recent congressional career. I believe Matthews was the most impressive loser in Congressional races in the sense that she had the highest number of votes for a loser.

4. She was a weak candidate
Wrong person, wrong credentials for her district. She was portraying herself as a "woman of the people" pro-union, former forklift driver in an area that covers a number affluent communities. Plus, she had a mullet. A better candidate would have been a progressive who understood both the local business economy (lots of white collar commuters) and was a supporter of education and Big Science, since the district includes about fourteen colleges/universities and JPL.

But, I bet Matthews could have won for less than $100K. First the California Dem Party stabbed her in the back for going on a right-wing talk show. (Reportedly Gloria Molina campaigned for Dreier!) Then they disowned her for having a John Birch pamphlet in her office (WTF?!) Then she got no national support.
