I'm a native Californian but I now live in Maryland. I have a friend back home who lives in the 16th district. He wrote to Rep. Lofgren about the Federal Marriage Amendment and rec'd this reply, which he sent to me today:
Dear Allen:
Thank you for contacting me regarding a Federal Marriage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This is an issue on which many people hold deep and passionate views.
I understand your feelings regarding same-sex marriage and the proposed changes to the Constitution and I agree with you. I do not and will not support an amendment to the Constitution that bans same-sex marriages. Traditionally, state law has governed marriage issues.
Same-sex couples should have the same opportunity to have rights and responsibilities toward each other as heterosexual couples. The only way to do that right now is to extend legal marriage to include them.
Please know that if and when this comes before me in the House of Representatives, I will certainly keep your views in mind.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please continue to contact me regarding this or any other matter of importance to you or our district.
Sincerely,
Zoe Lofgren Member of Congress
Note, she said nothing about civil unions. She wrote, "The only way to do that right now is to extend legal marriage to include them." :bounce You rock, Rep. Lofgren! ::yourock:
