Assemblyman Leno Introduces Taser Bill
Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, formally introduced a bill today that would prohibit the possession of Taser guns by civilians and require law enforcement to better track usage of the "less lethal'' weapons.

Assembly Bill 1237 was written in response to a growing number of Taser-related deaths across the country and in Northern California. One such death occurred in Salinas on Sunday night, when a man died after being shot five times with a Taser gun by police, according to a spokesman from Leno's office. <snip>

Beginning in 2006, each law enforcement agency in California would have to submit a monthly report to the Department of Justice each time a Taser gun is drawn. <snip>

By March 2007, each department would then be required to submit a copy of departmental policies for Taser use under each station's use of force policy. <snip>
