SACRAMENTO -- Peter Scheer, a lawyer, journalist and newspaper publisher, has been named executive director of the California First Amendment Coalition, the organization announced Tuesday.

Scheer was most recently the editor and publisher of The Recorder, daily legal newspaper in San Francisco. He also served as publisher of Legal Times, a Washington, D.C.-based weekly paper that covers lobbying and law. He has written extensively for legal publications and is a contributor to the online magazine Slate.

Scheer said the government's emphasis on secrecy in the post-9/11 world made CFAC's work more important than ever.

"During time of war, the government's credibility requires an even greater degree of openness than in peacetime," Scheer said. "CFAC's challenge is to force government to be more forthcoming by being more thoughtful and discriminating in its denials of access."
