California Quarter
Have you guys seen the new california quarter? Pffffft.. what a disappointment. And who in the hell is John Muir??

No, you don't have to tell me who he is. I know how to use google, just making a point.

1. John Muir
is more than worthy of being commemorated on a coin.

3. Hell Ya
Without him Yosemite and the Sierra's would have been ruined, he got T. Roosevelt to make National Parks.

2. At least it doesn't have a cow
and a chunk of cheese on it like Wisconsins. I haven't seen the California quarter yet. John Muir is on it, does he have siliconed breasts or something?

4. Representative of state
At least that cow/chunk of cheese is representative of Wisconsin. Florida has a space shuttle. You'd think we'd have like a palm tree, the ocean, the golden gate bridge, mining for gold or something thats a bit more representative of California.

5. the coin
shows Half-dome, Muir and a California Condor. I think they're all pretty representative of California.

6. Too young I guess
Sorry, but the coin is just boring to me. I mean they got space ships and big chunks of cheese, the old man in the mountain, sailing ships, lady liberty, race cars.

We should have a skateboard, or movie camera, or at least some gold minin' or the golden gate bridge! The coin is a snoozer. It's one of the most passive quarters I've seen, and yet for a state which is probably the most exciting.

7. yeah
too young, I guess.

I'd rather Half Dome be the symbol of our state than a skateboard.

9. I wasn't being very serious
(About the skateboard) - Was just trying to make a point that even a skateboard is more identifiable with people and it's roots in California than Half Dome.

Though you can't deny that skateboarding has become a world-wide sport, heh. :)

13. Half dome is a globally recognized symbol of California
Millions of tourists a year flock to Yosemite to see Half Dome, and it's one of the most recognizable natural features on the planet. It SHOULD be on the coin.

Muir was one of the most important Californians to ever live. Not only did he help to create Yosemite, but the entire National Park System exists as his legacy. This would be a completely different country if not for him.

I'll agree that the condor is stupid, though. If they wanted an animal in there, a seal or whale would have been much more recognizably Californian.

10. That is beautiful...and shows the part of California that was there before
all of those other things were. These were not man-made.

8. That explains it (Schwarzenegger screwed us again)
(From http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/50sq_program/states/index.cfm?state=CA):

The Commission forwarded 20 design concepts to Governor Gray Davis’s office for further consideration. From these, five were chosen as finalists and sent for final review to the United States Mint. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger chose the final selection from this group of five. The four other design concepts considered included "Waves and Sun," "Gold Miner," "Golden Gate Bridge," and the "Giant Sequoia" design.

Every other option is what I mentioned it should be (minus the Giant Sequoia, which I didn't think of but would be cool too). THANKS AGAIN ARNOLD!!! Idiot!

11. Better than Alabama's first try
Two dimes and a nickel duct taped together just didn't work, they had to recall them and try again.

(It's my home state, I'm allowed to kid.)

12. California is a very diverse state.
We have everything..Desert, palm trees, redwoods, forests, Golden Gate bridge, mountains...we have much to be proud of except Arni and the right wingers of our Orange county ilk....
But, natural beauty...John Muir popularized our natural legacy..Califonria is about preservation of our natural beauty; if the bulldozer does not get there first...But we try...Developers are well funded lobbysists after all;and they run the country..
Those who do not know the history of Muir need visit his museum in San Francisco...He and Gov. Hirma Johnson started the legacy of what was to become California..I just hope we maintain that tradition.
I think the coin appropriate...and something to be proud of...Know your history....ok..
If I had to take a visitor to just one spot for just a one day visit to California...it would be a hard choice...but, I think Yosemite would be the spot to represent the beauty of California-as long as it is not in July or August...
That being said...There are redwoods in Yosemite...A redwood along with Big Dome is equally a part of California...Unless you live in the part where there are palm trees or Bristle Trees...the oldest plant on the planet...
