A friend and supporter of Rep. David Dreier has formed a campaign committee to join Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in backing an initiative that would redraw California's legislative and congressional districts as soon as next year.
Dreier, a San Dimas Republican and the chairman of the House Rules Committee, has expressed concern that a mid-decade redistricting could cost the GOP seats in the House of Representatives.
Eight of the 20 California Republicans in the House signed a letter earlier this month endorsing Schwarzenegger's push for new districts in time for the 2006 elections. Dreier wasn't one of them.
But William Mundell, who has made campaign contributions to Dreier and is described as an old friend of the congressman, formed a committee called Californians for Fair Redistricting on March 2 to back an initiative that's also supported by Schwarzenegger.
