John Kerry in LA this Saturday, April 30th
I got this email from John Kerry today.

Dear XXXX,

No, I'm not running for mayor. But, my good friend, Antonio Villaraigosa is.

On Saturday April 30th, I will travel to LA to officially throw my support behind the Villaraigosa for Mayor campaign at a special event at the Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys. I hope you will join Antonio and me on Saturday.

RSVP here:
http://www.johnkerry.com/events/larsvp/

And I hope you will join me in actively supporting Antonio in the weeks between now and the May 17th election.

Rallying around a stand-up guy like Antonio Villaraigosa is exactly the kind of thing you and I and other members of our johnkerry.com community should be doing. He keeps his promises, works hard, and gets things done. He's a leader with integrity.

Antonio and I share a set of core convictions that I know you share as well. We believe in empowering citizens to make the most out of their own lives by ensuring access to quality, affordable health care, especially for our children; creating good jobs; and improving our public schools. Antonio is deeply committed to these goals. He has led efforts to modernize California's public schools and provide millions of children access to health care. I believe Antonio brings important leadership skills and a fresh vision to the challenges of major city governance. He always puts kids first and will put the families of Los Angeles first as mayor.

One of the most important character traits for me is loyalty. Antonio stood with me from the very beginning of my campaign, stepping out to endorse my candidacy in July of 2003, and he stuck by me during the tough times. I will never forget his leadership and his dedication to our fight for the White House. He gave everything he had to give campaigning across the country for months, playing a leadership role from day one.

I hope you will join me in standing up for his candidacy, and I hope you will join us on Saturday April 30th at the Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys.

Los Angeles has a great leader in Antonio, and I'm delighted to offer him my support.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

4. Hi!
Yes I would love to meet up with your daughter -- better meet somewhere outside the venue though cuz it will be WILD CROWDED I'll bet. I'm kind of prepared to not be able to get in or whatever, seemed too easy to get tickets!

My daughter Hayley is 14 so they are not really in the same age group but she would love to hang out with a college student for an hour or two!

Also tell your daughter if she is around that area that my parish (ex-parish since I gave up Catholicism for Lent last year, LOL) St. Francis de Sales is right around there and they have a really good outdoor festival on that day -- it goes to 11 pm or so and they have live music and stuff. Celeb singers include Spencer Davis and sometimes Tom Petty's drummer is with them too.

That is St. Francis de Sales on Fulton and Moorpark if she is interested!

Have her email me if she wants to meet up first, OK?

-- Katie

Me and Mr. kt got there about 2 hours early because we had no idea what to expect.

It was a small area in the quad on a junior college. We were right up front. Other people started filtering in. Everyone was talking and consoling one another over the "civil reich" movement that has taken this country hostage. Many people (like us) were wearing Kerry/Edwards shirts, hats, etc. A ton others were wearing Villaraigosa shirts ebcause it was a rally for him with Kerry endorsing.

Finally, it started. There were some real energetic speeches. In fact,Bob Hertzberg, a Dem who had run in the primaries, was really jazzed up and enthuased. He really got people excited. Richard Alacon spoke, and a few others who I am frawing blanks on (I can see them, but I have lost their names in my collective emeory bank right now!)

The president of the student body (a woman, yeah!) introduced Villaraigosa and Kerry. Everyone went nuts cheering. There were photographers from the media pushing us up front out of their way, but I still managed to be up in the front.

When Kerry came out, I started waving my biography on his. He pointed to it, smiled and gave me the thumbs up. I shouted "We still got your back, John!" He smiled and nodded his head. Other people cheered similar things and he responded to each one tha he could recognize. He really knows how to connect with an audience.

Half-way through his speech, the mic blew a fuse. He went to the side, started shaking hands and signing autographs. A lady next to me tried to hand him my book, but he didn't get it in time. Mr. kt did, however, get to shake his hand. The mic was fixed and he started speaking again.

He introced Villaraigosa, who was a marvelous speaker. I WISH I lived within the limits of LA city so I could vote for him, but in Pasadena, we have our own mayor (a DEM!), so all I can do is volunteer. I am so inspired to do so!

Anyway, after the rousing speeches, Kerry stayed on the stage, signing and shaking hands. A really cool guy was staning next to me. He took my book and held it up for Kerry. We kept calling Kerry's name. I was so close, I shouted, "MY Vietnam vetern father says thank you!" It might be he heard me or just was turning our direction anyway, I don't know, but he took my book and signed his name. I was so thrilled.

Me and Mr. kt hubg around and watched all the excitement. Then, we jump inthe gauntlent line as Villaraigose and then Kerry walked by, shaking hands and signing autographs. I was able to shake his hand when he came by. I got a picture of Mr. kt shaking his hand a second time. Mr. kt also got a moment to look Kerry in the eyes and say "thank you. I worked for you because I believe in you." Kerry said thank you to Mr. kt. That was super-dooper cool, let me tell you!

After it was over, we had a lady take a picture of us in our matching K?E shirts, holding a copy of the book Kerry signed. That book is now front and center i a glass curio case we have a home. It will always remind me of how wonderful hearing Kerry speak was!

We left on such a high. It felt so positive and uplifting. After that, we took off to Mar Vista to volunteer for a city council race. Mar Vista is no where near Pasadena, but we have a friend volunteering full time on this race. He really believes in Bill Rosendahl, and if we can help a Dem, we do. Hearing Rosendahl speak was also a positive and uplifting experience on a more local level. We came home so full and eleated with joy.

I wish everyday could be as wonderful as Saturday!

Edited to add:

Did anyone see us? This is the only Internet pic I have of me and Mr. kt:

10. Hi, Kerrytravelers!
I just found your post. Even though it's been a while, I had to respond. I also attended the Kerry/Villaraigoso event in Van Nuys a few weeks ago. It was great to relive it through reading your post!:-) I'm sure I must have seen you there, as I arrived about the same time. Wasn't it wonderful? I also had the opportunity to shake Kerry's hand and say thank you personally...that meant so much to be able to do that. I videotaped the beginning of his speech. What a wonderful President he would be. I don't think my feet touched the ground for at least a week after that Saturday!:hi:
