Is Colorado’s Attorney General misusing his office?

Dear Network Member,

Last Wednesday, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers requested more funding to address an increase of consumer fraud cases. (Denver Post, 11/24/2006)

Yet in the Attorney General’s most recent Annual Report, Suthers touts his accomplishments including joining legal battles in other states on such controversial issues as gay marriage in Nebraska and the Pledge of Allegiance in Virginia.

Suthers is now asking the Joint Budget Committee for an increase of $204,000 for his office to enforce consumer protection laws at the same time his office is touting their work on 'friend-of-the-court briefs' claiming that these cases, and others, are necessary to “protect” Colorado.

(ColoradoConfidential.com, 11/21/2006)

Why is Suthers putting his office resources, paid for by the taxpayers of Colorado, toward politics in other states rather than protecting consumers in Colorado?

Call on Suthers to stop misusing his office—and our tax dollars—to pursue his right-wing legal agenda in other states while claiming he doesn't have sufficient resources to protect Colorado consumers:

The FBI identified Colorado as one of the top 10 hot spots in the U.S. for mortgage fraud. (Rocky Mountain News, 7/13/2006) Suthers himself has noted that he was only able to investigate around 50 out of more than 700 fraud-related complaints submitted to his office in 2005. (CO AG Press Release, 1/25/2006)

So why does Suthers waste his office legal time on right-wing out of state pursuits? Click below to call on Suthers to refocus his efforts on in-state needs like fighting fraud in Colorado:

We will deliver your request to Suthers and to the members of the Joint Budget Committee prior to their upcoming hearing to review the Attorney General’s budget.

With your help, we will hold Suthers accountable and ensure he puts Colorado consumers—and taxpayers—above his right-wing legal agenda.

Sincerely,

Michael Huttner
Executive Director
