So Dodd for Pres? Thoughts?
I'm not sure what to think at this point.

I'd be interested in your opinions.

1. Ah, I'm neither jumping off my chair nor uninterested.
Looks like I'm in the same boat as you.

2. My thoughts
Edited on Wed May-24-06 07:26 AM by connecticut yankee
First -- it's probably too late for 2008.

Second -- he has too much excess baggage.

I've always liked him, but I'm very disenchanted with his support of Lieberman.

3. I'm not sure that it's too late.
Any "baggage" Chris has is no way near as bad as W's and it's very mild at that. As a fellow senator and member of the powers that be, there is no way he can avoid supporting Lieberman. His positions are closer to Lamont's than Lieberman's and I'm sure that he'll have no problem supportin Lamont when the time comes (and it WILL come),

I'm glad he's giving it a shot. He wanted to go for it last time around but he deferred to Lieberman because of Lieberman having been the vp nominee.

On another topic, the reason Chris didn't get majority leader over Daschle was that Kerry, alone among the whole New England delegation, voted for Daschle. There was much speculation in the CT press about Kerry's motives.

4. That's interesting...
why in the world would Kerry have done that? Competition?

5. Not bad.
He's always been a viable candidate; even Presidential. Maybe thinking about Lieberman as a replacement for the seat after he loses his in November. Could need a Democratic Governor first but those odds may not favor it.

Whoever runs will catch all kinds of labels and smear. You have to look at the candidate as a campaigner who can rise above all the dirt. I think he can do that.

7. I'd rather he ran for governor this year...
but, it's too late for that now!

I prefer Gore for president over Dodd, anyhow.

8. Yeah, that would be something
Heck, at this point I'd even support LIEberman for Governor. Though I'm not a fan, foreign policy issues won't be a problem and Rell would actually have to lift a finger and do something.

9. No to Dodd
I don't want to see anybody elected that defends Joe Lieberman. I have never voted for a Republican but if Democrats continue to act like Republicans than I will begin to vote for Republicans. Somebody wake me up when my party gets back to it's roots.

10. Dodd has never thrilled me
I like that he is a Dem, and a good Dem often. It's just that I don't think another Northeastern liberal Dem needs to be running for Prez on the Dem ticket. Enough!

11. Colin McEnroe hits the nail in the coffin of Dodd's Prez ambitions

<blockquote>Dodd would like to be even more important than he is, and the only thing worse than not doing that is being asked to hold Lieberman's purse, occasionally, while he tries to climb another ladder. In 2004, Dodd took a look at running for president, and I guess the numbers didn't work. They didn't work, ultimately, for Lieberman either, although he showed a special flair with numbers, as when he announced when he had "tied for third place" in New Hampshire with John Edwards and Wesley Clark, when in fact he had finished unambiguously fifth.

This year, Dodd is once again peeking through his fingers at a presidential nomination. Two very important things for him to do, if he really wants to run, are to deepen the admiration that already exists for him among progressive Democrats who would be most likely to support the early stages of his run, and to travel this great nation during 2006 raising money for Democrats in problematic races and demonstrating that he is the kind of heavy-hitter who can help just about anybody, just by showing up.

So what was he doing on the night of Friday, May 19? Risking the rage of progressive Democrats by giving yet another nominating speech for Guess Who and demonstrating to the world that, far from being a mighty rainmaker and good-luck charm, he is struggling to breathe life, in his own back yard, into a colleague who is flatlining despite the kind of intensive care ordinarily reserved, in America, for champion racehorses with broken legs.

The truest line in Dodd's speech was, "I'm here tonight because Joe Lieberman asked me."

That and a hostage situation were the only possible explanations. This was a total no-win for Dodd. The very people whose loyalty he needs were screaming so loudly in protest that the senator could barely be heard. And who's going to ask him for help in New Mexico or Oregon if his own vaudeville partner can't even secure a re-nomination?

12. Listen to Colin's interview with Chris
Edited on Fri Jun-02-06 10:38 PM by monarch
where they joke about the column http://www.wtic.com/pages/5478.php?

It's fairly short and it shows what a great candidate Chris will be. He gives a really good interview, relaxed and funny, kidding Colin about his column. Quite difference from Joe's petulant performance! Chris gets in all of his talking points without sounding scripted and he includes practically every important liberal position starting out by slamming the pubs for their loser defense of marriage and flag burning amendments and going on from there.

Well worth a listen!
