Poll: Anti-Bush, Anti-War Feeling Does Not Hurt Lieberman

From a May 2, 2006 Quinnipiac University Poll:

U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman gets a 59 - 29 percent (job) approval, compared to 63 - 25 percent February 16. In a possible Democratic primary, the incumbent beats businessman Ned Lamont 65 - 19 percent, with most Lamont supporters saying they are voting against Lieberman.

Running as an independent, Lieberman has 56 or 57 percent in possible three-way races, with Lamont challenging him on the Democratic line and either former State Rep. Alan Schlesinger or businessman Paul Streitz running on the Republican line.

Most Connecticut voters, 57 percent, know Lieberman supports the war in Iraq, but only 15 percent would vote against a candidate based only on his position on the war.

An April 27 Rasmussen poll gave Lieberman a lead of 20 percentage points over Lamont in the Primary, compared to the 46 point spread predicted by Quinnipiac.

1. I guess you haven't been following this race.

I'm not sure that the poll was accurate then, but it sure as hell doesn't represent the situation today.

2. I'm not from Connecticut so you probably have a perspective I don't have

I have been doing my best to follow the race. I know Lamont got over 30% of the delegate vote at the convention. If you want to enlighten me with some specifics, I would be receptive.

Please note, I offered results of two polls and they both paint the same picture. The most recent one was a month old, so things might have changed since then. If you know of any other poll that could be taken into account I would be grateful if you would direct me to it. I see no reasonable justification for doubting the general accuracy of either of these two polls.

3. This poll was before the May 19th convention

and polls take a few weeks to register changes. Also Ned Lamont's biggest problem is name recognition, which this poll shows. Hopefully being on the front page of the Hartford Courant in a positive light after the May 19th convention will improve Ned's name recognition numbers. Those are the numbers to keept track of right now.
