The Lieberman effect on CT races.
Edited on Sun Jun-18-06 05:55 AM by monarch
Compare and contrast the treatment of the Hartford Courant article this fine Sunday morning with the one in the New Haven Register. The Courant article places the onus on Joe for going independent. The Register (from Joe's former city of CT residence) faults Lamont and repeats the Lieberman lies about his support. The following statements are demonstrably untrue or distorted:

"Core left-leaning groups continue to see him as a reliable friend. The League of Conservation Voters, Washington’s most politically aggressive environmental group, endorsed his re-election, citing his national role in thwarting Republican efforts to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling and his effort to protect Connecticut’s environment.

"Among organized labor, Lieberman has won endorsements from unions of carpenters, bricklayers, letter carriers and other postal workers, communications workers, electricians, firefighters, hotel and restaurant workers and Teamsters. Also endorsing him are women’s and gay and lesbian groups.

"The fact is, from fiscal policy to the environment to the bread-and-butter issues that affect working families, Lieberman is a tried and true Democrat. His support for the war hardly merits an inter-party insurgency that could threaten Democrat control of that seat and the entire Senate."

Lawrence J. Haas, former communications director for Vice President Al Gore and former director of public affairs at Yale University, is visiting senior fellow at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute, Georgetown University,

Lieberman's votes for the arctic refuge do not balance out his votes affecting New England-- his support for Bush's energy legislation for example. His labor support, which is left over from his early days and his identification as a Democrat, is lukewarm at best-- teachers unions have come out strongly for Lamont and there will be an important vote at a union convention later this month that will be make or break for Lieberman.

Lieberman is actually opposed, vehemently opposed, by women and gays.

Lieberman and the party establishment are definitely counting on the idiot vote!

2. My LTTE
Who is Hurting Democratic Party ?

In his op-ed piece on Sunday, Lawrence Haas tries to convince us that Ned Lamont’s run for the Senate race is endangering the Democrat’s hold on that seat. But his logic is flawed.

If Lamont loses the primary he has pledged to support Lieberman. On the other hand, if it turns out that Lamont is the choice of the majority of registered Democrats in CT, Lieberman is threatening to run as an independent thereby causing a three-way race in November. So exactly who will be jeopardizing the Party’s hold on that Senate seat?
