CT Repub Senate Candidate a "Blackjack Addict"

Alan R. Scheslinger seemed to be playing a long shot when he announced in March that he would run for the U.S. Senate. How long even he may not have realized. After being branded Wednesday as a card-counting blackjack addict with a $50,000 debt at one of the state's Indian-run casinos, the former Derby mayor and six-term state representative is under pressure from Republican Party elders to fold his hand.

<snip>

The viability of Schlesinger's candidacy was called into question Wednesday when Bradley Beecher, a retired Connecticut State Police officer whose last assignment was as commander of the Casino and Licensing Unit, forwarded to reporters copies of e-mails he had exchanged with Schlesinger and Rell.

Beecher, in his e-mail to the governor, said he was "able to document a long history of improper relationships between Connecticut Republicans and Connecticut casinos" and described Schlesinger's candidacy as "a train wreck in progress."

<snip>

The last publicly available campaign finance report filed by Schlesinger with the Federal Election Commission showed that he had collected only $20,350 in contributions between January and April, which included a $10,000 loan made or guaranteed by the candidate himself.

1. Didn't see this thread before I posted
in another thread in this forum.
I think the man has a problem in more ways than one.
I didn't see much fault in him obtaining another "rewards card' by using a different name but this new story is troubling.

3. Call me a tin-foil conspiracy theorist, but...
this has less to do with a guy who uses a nickname to play cards then the Republicans desire to have Joe Lieberman re-elected. They're just clearing the path.

4. I don't think so. I may be wrong but I think Rell and other top
repubs really want to replace Schlesinger with a more viable candidate. Read the editorial in today's NH Register.

6. I disagree...
...and it's a known fact that Jack Orchulli would have considered a run at this seat had the Republican Party expressed ANY interest in his candidacy. He's a smart guy but a moderate Republican, and skeptical of the war. Unfortunately, a Democrat who supports Bush, Cheney, Rice and Alito is more valuable to the political advisors like Rove than a "moderate" (sane) Republican.

They had a chance to run a competitive race with a viable candidate and they chose to do nothing. Come to think of it, I'd have a hard time voting for Joe over him. Thankfully we have a Democrat in the race and we can begin to solve that problem on August 8th.

7. Interesting about Orchulli. Where is he from?
Your scenario does make some sense. The only 2 names put out there for the Repubs to run were Shays and Johnson. The window on that opportunity is gone. And Johnson really is too old, IMHO.
