State Senator Questions Use Of Reverse 9-1-1 On Election Night

A state senator has said the use of the state's emergency reverse 9-1-1 system on election night in Bridgeport was improper, and he's called for an investigation.

Sen. Kevin Witkos, a Republican from the 8th District and a Canton police sergeant, made the request to the state Attorney General and Chief State's Attorney.

Tuesday night, after the registrar of voters in Bridgeport ran out of ballots and began using photocopied ballots instead, a judge in Hartford granted a request from state Democrats to keep the polls open an extra two hours, until 10 p.m. Officials used the reverse 9-1-1 system to let voters know polls were open longer.

"State law is very clear that reverse 9-1-1 is an emergency notification system only," Witkos stated. "As a matter of fact, the law very clearly states that the system is to be used only in case of life-threatening emergencies."
