Florida Teachers and those of you who support public education, PLEASE PLEASE go to the link.
Here is a link to the Florida Democratic Party. It takes all of 2 minutes to send an email out to Senators Atwater and Thrasher expressing your outrage at their viscious attack on teachers in Florida. Do it ASAP as the Senate is about to vote tomorrow!

There is no need to punish all teachers for a few bad ones.

1. I am confused
I know they have avoided reducing class size for years after voters went to the polls to force them to do so. The party seems to be agreeing with the republicans now and asking them not to reduce class size, hire more teachers?
Can you explain the backstory?

2. My original post is about Senate Bill 6 which is a direct attack
on teachers. It ties almost all my pay to one standardized test score given at the end of the year.

Even if the premise that tying pay to test scores is good, there is no research to support the premise. This will end up with even good teachers at high needs schools scared for their jobs. Some will end up fired because a kid doesn't score a certain level, set by a faceless bureaucrat, on a test.

The Class Size Amendment, a different issue, is under assault by the Republicans because they hate spending money on schools in Florida. We rank 50th in per capita spending and 39th in per pupil spending. If the FDP is smart it will support the teachers in this, otherwise I become an independent and I will not support the FDP anymore.

4. The Republican legislature in FL is planning on ending public education.
Their plan ties teacher tenure, certification, and pay to one test per year. This is a continuation of Jeb Bush's own "devious plan" to end free education. There is no way this will ever work. The plan calls for "good" teachers to be moved to failing schools. If the students do not make learning gains then the "good" teachers will be fired as well. The legislature has already turned their backs on the families in Florida who are struggling to survive without decent jobs. I teach 20 students and 11 of those little children do not have their mother or they have been through some other sort of hardship. I am the only adult in some of their lives that is able to listen to them and make sure they are doing okay. Once this terrible bill becomes law, then teachers will only be able to focus on the test that pays their own bills.

3. Done. I have been sending my own emails as well. Our local union is planning
to have teachers demonstrate around town after spring break. Of course, it will take a miracle to get the local media to pay us any attention.

5. education
Education is a wonderful thing and we must always support those who educate.

There are some good educational initiatives for veterans who are back in school to become teachers.

The Democratic Veterans Caucus of Florida is going to be a helluva organization and strong force in Florida's future!
