Shooting leaves 2 Tampa police officers dead
Source: TBO

TAMPA - Two Tampa police officers are dead after being shot this morning during a traffic stop.

A massive search is under way for the suspects – a man and woman in a red 1994 Toyota Camry.

Officer Jeffrey Kocab, 31, had been with the department for about 14 months, coming from the Plant City Police Department. His wife, Sara, is nine months pregnant.

Officer Dave Curtis, also 31, had been with the department for almost four years. The former Hillsborough County jail deputy leaves behind his wife, Kelly, and four sons, ages 9 years to 8 months.

2. I'm sorry.....
...I missed the part where the article says that "gang members" were involved in this shooting. You know something the rest of us don't? The article did say that the shooter is believed to be black, so maybe that's what you're referring to???

Something about the BEHAVIOR of murdering two police officers who have stopped you in traffic gives me sort of a, you know, "gut feeling" that one or both of the suspects may have had some kind of compelling REASON to take extreme measures in order to avoid being taken into police custody.

Like, maybe being a fugitive from justice, or having an extensive criminal record, or having illegal drugs or an illegally possessed GUN in the car with them.

Time will tell whether or not my instinct is right on this. It usually is. Most violent crime is committed by people who have already proved themselves to be violent criminals. It's extremely rare for someone with no criminal record, or someone facing nothing worse than a misdemeanor warrant, to suddenly murder an innocent person, much less two police officers.

Just poking fun at someone who apparently refuses to see the obvious. I don't generally believe in extrasensory perceptive powers.

21. True, but it's quite interesting.
My old high school physics teacher moved on to teaching physics in FL's only all-gifted school (he's very close to retirement). He's probably one of the happiest people I know. He should have been teaching college-level (he has a PhD) but LOVES teaching children and rotates from middle school to high school every few years.

10. Perhaps the criminal justice system has already failed the public by not jailing the man sooner
We'll figure that out as the story develops.

11. I got your fucking Simpleton
What do suggest a fucking hug or a nice long talk with him about why it is wrong to kill people ?

Maybe if you knew how cold and ruthless these little fucking gang bangers are you would put away your kid gloves and wake the fuck up.

23. 2 things need to be done
1 Punish the killer for the crime they have done

2 try to figure out what makes people turn so cold and ruthless and work to stop that process in an effort to avoid future tragedies.

24. ???? he killed 2 cops
they damn well will put an effort in, hell killing 2 people would get a huge effort anyways, the fact that cops are looking for cop killers will make them look harder.

the entire county was locked down.

And yeah, they got their man.

17. Happens all the time in my local news - only difference is cops got shot - however the fellon has a
life of crime and arrests, belongs in prison, but was out and killed people.

Typical.

It's because people don't want their taxes to pay for prisons. If the gov was not blowing our taxes on paying the war enterprises we'd have enough in federal money to lock people up again - which we haven't been doing since Bush 2 got elected and in 2001 he cut funding for all state prisons.

19. Florida will end up using their "Final Solution" on this one, one way or another
Either a capital murder trial and a date with Old Sparky at public expense, or the far less expensive "hail of police gunfire" option.

22. Chilling comment from user 'JustJim' on tampabay.com
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 03:03 PM by slackmaster
in 2005 I was shot in the back and left arm by Dontae Rashawn Morris while walking from one house to another in my neighborhood, what should have taken less than two minutes changed my life forever. Dontae had two people with him, the driver and a passenger in the back seat. His exact words were "●●●●●●● give me your wallet" I said, "Dude I don't have any money" turned around continued walking and then he shot me.
I ran screaming like a girl.He was charged with: ATTEMPTED MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE FI/ROBBERY (LESS THAN $300) FIREARM DISCHA/FELON IN POSSESSION DICHARGE INJUR/POSSESSION OF A SHORT-BARRELED SHOTGUN /AGGRAVATED BATTERY (FIREARM)and two NVDL charges which makes no sense since he wasn't driving, The driver and aqccomplice was let go b4 I was out of surgery, and given his car back, even though he was also NVDL.All charges had to be dropped because they eluded to his prior convictions as a felon in the name of a fair trial. You can thank the HCSAO for his his freedom-pt1...

...pt2. Had the HCSAO sought to just get him on the felon with possession and related felony charges, they would have had success, instead they tried for the grandiose Attempted Murder thereby negating all other charges . If they had gone with the VOP,felony charges, like I suggested and dropped the attempted murder charge DRM would be serving 25 years, but because of SAO ego, He walked away a free man. These poor guys didn't have to die, it's pathetic and a great shame that this has happened, Even going to the Mayor proved futile. I blame the HCSAO for this and they know they screwed up. They also know, I know they screwed up.
The article is half right as most articles usually are, some truth some distortion. I have 3-4 hundred pellets in my left back , arm and lung and no feeling in my left hand because of this kid.But I have my life and am thankful for that. I am very angry at this senseless and needless crime, it could and should have been prevented. Thank You Mark Ober...

...I disagree with those wishing to "fry him" the greater punishment is for him to never have "freedom" again. Cops choose their vocation,They know the risks and these two paid the ultimate price.I want to know why this much commotion isn't raised when innocent citizens, the ones LEOs are sworn to protect are killed? It's as if a greater value is put on those choosing to be in LE than those they're sworn to protect.Again I am sorry for the families of these two officers, however the bigger picture is being ignored. If you want to know why this happened ask Mark Ober, Ryan Sawdy Mike Sinacore, why this man was allowed to walk away after what he did to me, I think perhaps my life isn't worth as much as a LEO's and unless you're a LEO neither is yours. Don't you feel safer, Knowing if you were shot or killed it wouldn't be as big a deal as it would if you were a cop?
Sworn to protect the community... Don't we all protect our communities in different ways? this isn't a police state yet is it...

I hope they take him alive. I want him to live the rest of his life in prison.
