Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) for Women --and Men. Finally?

"Equality under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex"/gender.

Women and men still do not have equal treatment guaranteed by these words under the U.S. Constitution. In order to become a Constitutional amendment, 3/4 of the states in the union need to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. With only three more states needed to reach the threshold of 38 to pass the Constitutional amendment, true gender-equal rights is within reach.

Florida’s is one of only 3 states’ legislatures that still need to ratify the amendment so that ERA may pass into the U.S. Constitution.
The Senate version of the bill, SCR 286, is filed by Senator Nan Rich (D-Sunrise). “As the first woman to lead the Democratic Caucus in the Florida Senate, I’m proud to sponsor the ERA,” Senator Rich said.. “I am hopeful that with the ERA’s passage, we will continue the progress that women have made in taking on leadership roles in business, politics, academia and society in general.” SCR 286 already has gained co-sponsors including Joyner, Margolis, Sobel and Ring. Others in the pipeline plan to formalize their cosponsorships.
Representative Lori Berman newly filed HCR 8003, the companion bill in the House.

“Equitable rights for all people are an inherent part of being an American, and the foremost duty of our government is to protect those inalienable rights. The Equal Rights Amendment will offer formal protection to a woman’s right to equality,” said Rep. Berman.

Florida's bill to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment REQUIRES NO FUNDING. Ratification of the amendment requires only a simple majority vote of both houses of the Legislature. No general referendum is required.

“Since the ERA does not regulate abortion or any of the other false special-interest objections, it is clear that this long-proposed amendment simply reflects the traditional, moral American value of equality for all regardless of gender. What American could be against that? Scandinavian countries capitalize on the finding that wherever equality of gender is the standard, the economy/GDP grows. America should, too.” –Sandy Oestreich, founder-President of Equal Rights Alliance, Inc. of Florida, which re-ignited Florida's ERA effort in 2001. WWW.2PassERA.org for the correct, complete, current ERA information.”

“With some 200,000 women who have served in wartime Iraq and Afghanistan, 134 have been killed and 721 wounded in action, it is apparent that this is not a Democratic or a Republican issue but simply the right thing to do.” --Tara Laxer, Southeast Florida Regional Director, Education, Equal Rights Alliance, Inc.
