Governor's order leaves disabled with few options, resources

CLEARWATER — Dozens of developmentally disabled Pinellas County residents will lose their homes and treatment programs due to sudden budget cuts instituted last week by Gov. Rick Scott.

At the Upper Pinellas Association for Retarded Citizens in North Pinellas, 30 people in group homes and day treatment programs were discharged from services they had depended on for years. Their support coordinators now have 30 days to find replacements for homes, caregivers and treatments, many of them highly specialized.

One of those discharged is Catherine Smith, 29, who has severe behavioral problems and the mental capacity of a 10-year-old. For the last seven years, she has received 24-hour care in a women's group home in Palm Harbor staffed by people with special training in dealing with such behavior issues. Catherine recently was hospitalized for stabbing a pen under her skin.

Timothy Smith, a father of five who fought in court to find Catherine a home to suit her needs, said she is having trouble dealing with the emotions of the change.

Smith voted for Scott for governor because he recognized the state's financial issues, but now questions his judgment.

Unlike his daughter I have absolutely no sympathy for this man. He likely thought the "freeloaders" he and his Tea Party were going to kick off the dole were all brown skinned.

Meanwhile, let's cut some more taxes for businesses and while we're at it let's close a big part of All Childrens Hospital, Tampa General and whereever else we can shit on those freeloaders :sarcasm:

I forgot to add, I plan on buying a mega yacht because I won't have to pay sales tax on it. I figure that after spending $350,000.00 for a boat I shouldn't have to pay 7% in state fees. Does that sound ok to you?

(psssst, I'm lying, I can't even afford to register the boat I've had for 10 years, let alone put gas in it) But mega yacht owners don't have to pay sales tax on their toys.

Oh, I have seen that happen many years ago in New York. I wonder how the Snowbirds and Tourists will like that?

I have worked with this population and KNOW they cannot survive on their own. Many, many of these people were abandoned by their families, or have outlived them. The woman in this story is very fortunate to still have family around to even attempt to take care of her.

Children, disabled, and old people are going to suffer because of this jerk in the Governor's office. He belongs in JAIL, not Tallahassee.
