DAVIE · It was a birthday party for a guest of honor everyone knew wouldn't show up.

After all, Charles Darwin would have turned 198 today. But that didn't stop a group of Broward atheists and others from gathering to celebrate the life of one of the foremost experts on evolution with some chocolate cake and music.

About 75 people came out to Flamingo Gardens for the six-hour party and workshop, where various speakers expounded on Darwin's theories with slide presentations, songs and some debate.

In a crowd filled with people ages 3 to 80, some said they came out to the party sponsored by the Center for Inquiry and the Atheists of Broward County to hear more and mingle with others who have an open mind about Darwinism.

"People are still terrified to say they think differently about our origins," said Ronelle Delmont, 62, of Pembroke Pines, who is an atheist. "It's like the last closet anyone wants to come out of."

This is the second year the atheist group has sponsored a celebration for Darwin Day, although they said the last one was a lot smaller.

Ken Loukinen, the head of the Atheists of Broward County, said their numbers have grown from a few a couple of years ago to about 130. The group meets regularly in Davie.

1. i dont understand why atheism celebrates darwin or why religions scorn him.

evolution does nothing to explain the root mysteries of the universe or life itself.

there is no problem with the inclusion of evolution into the bibles stories if you want to believe in a god.

there is also no real reason for atheists to get all high and mighty about there being no god when there is obviously no way to prove scientifically, at least for the foreseeable future, the real mysteries of life and existence or to provide an alternative.

so in either case it comes down to personal belief.

2. Well said
Evolution and religion are not mutually exclusive. Darwin is not the "God" of the atheists. Evolution only explains life on the planet after its appearance, not how it got here.

3. Atheism doesn't celebrate anything
It isn't a belief system. Atheists gathered that day to celebrate science and rational thought.

Atheism is simply non-belief in god/s, dogma, deities, etc. There are no "principles" or "rules" attached - there are no commandments, etc., etc. And again, no belief, only lack of belief. And when you can provide a universal, agreed upon definition of what a "god" is, I'll gladly start searching for evidence of such a thing. Until then, I will firmly state there are no "god/s".

Just sayin'
