"A speeding car struck and killed two Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies and injured another Wednesday as the officials tried to stop the vehicle, authorities said.

The deputies were putting stop sticks on the highway when they were hit by the car at about 1:45 a.m. A third deputy was being treated at a hospital for head wounds.

Police were looking for two suspects who fled from the vehicle, which was believed to be stolen. At least 75 officers were combing nearby canefields, where the suspects were believed to be hiding.

"We believe we have (the suspects) contained, but it's a very large area to search, thick and dense," said Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.

The deputies are the latest south Florida law enforcement victims this year."

1. Update:
1 held, 1 sought after 2 deputies are killed

<snip>

"Two Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies trying to snare car thieves were mistakenly struck and killed by a fellow officer early Wednesday morning on a secluded stretch of road near Lake Okeechobee, next to a fog-shrouded cane field.

One man was being questioned Wednesday morning and another was still on the loose in this latest in a rash of tragedies involving South Florida law enforcement officers.

The deputies, who had just laid out some tire-deflation devices to stop the stolen vehicle in its tracks, were mowed down by a squad car that was pursuing the by-then disabled Toyota Camry.

"You are talking about a road that is absolutely pitch black," said Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw. "You are talking about deputies wearing dark green uniforms."

In the confusion after the crash, the car-theft suspects bailed out of their Toyota Camry and dashed into the neighboring cane field. A massive search proved fruitless, although one person was later taken into custody. His name was not immediately released.

The deputies killed were identified as Donta J. Manuel, 33, a 13-year veteran of the sheriff's office, and Jonathan D. Wallace, 23, who joined the sheriff's office a year ago when it absorbed the Pahokee Police Department."

2. methinks english is their second language
"The deputies are the latest south Florida law enforcement victims this year."

Latest as in late?

The most recent given that it happened today?

"Law enforcement victims" - has its own problems, especially when Chicago Police are under investigation for shooting people for holding a cell phone in their hand. Now, there is a law enforcement victim.

I am sorry for the officers' families, but that last sentence in that article is just plain "for shit".

3. They may have misworded it.
What they may have meant to say was that these two officers were the lataest law enforcement officers to be victims of violence against them.

And can you elaborate on the Chicago incident? I haven't been getting home early enough to watch the news.

4. The Law enforcement victims were struck by a police car.
I agree that it is a awkward structure, but given that the officers were hit by a police car, it may be appropriate.

5. A tragic incident. They were pursuing car thieves who might have been in the process
of committing violent crimes.

All too often, testosterone-laden cops get into high-speed chases over nothing, but this chase seems to have been justified. Also, it wasn't high-speed. So it was two cops killed while doing their jobs, trying to protect the public. I feel sorry for their families, and also for the cop who accidentally ran into them with his squad car.
