AJC Forum: Paper Ballot Receipts
Today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution has an good article on the editorial page authored by Secretary of State Cathy Cox, on the subject of paper ballot receipts. She makes some good points about potential problems with receipts but fails to adequately address other possible safeguards that would create some improved level of trust in electronic voting.

This is the subject of the AJC's E-Mail Forum: Would providing paper ballot receipts make electronic voting more reliable? Send your e-mail to issue@ajc.com where it will be posted online. Please include full name, city or county of residence and daytime phone. (Phone numbers will not be published).

or you can use the link to the AJC on-line forum: http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/custom/blogs/opiniontalk/index.html

I plan to send a comment. Hope everyone here will also!

1. I sent a comment.
Is Cathy Cox backing off a little? Now she welcomes paper ballots if they are effective and affordable? That sounds like a slight shift to me.

I too was glad to see that she's at least acknowledged the problem people have with the lack of a paper trail. who knows, maybe my LTTE to the AJC helped reinforce that a smidgeon.

But there's something bone-chilling about the notion that we should only have free and fair elections if we can do it cost-effectively, which seems to be the thrust of her arguments.
