1. Money. They typically move to the Atlanta Metro Area (suburban counties)
and not to Atlanta itself. Only wealthy freepers can afford to live in areas like Buckhead. The counties that surround Atlanta vary demographically. Typically, most freepers live in the largely white, northern counties like Cobb or in Gwinnett County to the east. Ralph Reed lives in Gwinnett County.

The Georgia economy is in trouble. We've lost a lot of jobs and manufacturing facilities. Peach Care (insurance for poor children) is almost in the red due to federal cuts and the state education budget has been cut by 1.4 billion dollars to provide the GOP with corporate tax cuts. (Keep in mind that GA ranks 49th in education.) Delta is in bankruptcy (9-11 hurt the airline industry and Delta is the main airline at the Atlanta airport.) The housing boom is still strong in Northeast Georgai but I fear that the bubble is about to burst. Rising gas prices have really hurt everyone in Georgia. Since, except for two or three express buses) there is no public transit from Atlanta to the suburban counties, commuters are paying huge amounts to drive in the nightmare that is Atlanta traffic.

3. Has the economy slowed the rate of freepers moving into the area?

4. The rate of population growth has not yet been affected by the economy.
Most of the economic problems are hovering like a guillotine over our collective necks.

Water issues are becoming critical especially in times of drought and massive heat waves. The Army Corps of Engineers, Florida and Alabama are fighting Georgia over the Chattahoochee River's water. Atlanta and surrounding areas use and waste huge amounts of water. People still want to irrigate lawns during droughts. Most every jurisdiction has water use restrictions in place. The GOP and developers are trying to strip away environmental protections for streams and watersheds. They would like to place septic tanks within stream buffers and reduce steam buffers in order to construct closer to streams thus destroying watersheds, polluting water and killing the environment.
Transportation policy is a joke. The GA DOT builds roads as fast as possible thus enriching big construction and engineering firms.
:grr:

2. They know they'll have Perdue and the like in their pockets
And even if they can't get hold of the GOP's corporate giveaways and welfare, they can always side with the conservative Uncle Tom Georgia Democratic Party.

6. What the hell does THAT mean?
Freepers are moving to Atlanta because PEOPLE - all kinds of them - are moving here.
