Man shot after using stun gun to prevent carjacking

An Atlanta man who tried to fend off an armed carjacker by using a stun gun gun was shot at least five times by the gunman Wednesday afternoon.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with wounds to the abdomen and leg. He is expected to survive, said Atlanta police Sgt. Lisa Keyes.

The man was driving a minivan when he was accosted by the carjacker at the intersection of Forest Park and Conley roads in southeast Atlanta.

The carjacker jumped in, ordered the man to drive and demanded his money, police said. The man, while trying to reach for his money, also pulled out his stun gun and zapped the carjacker.

The gunman reacted by shooting the man at least five times, Keyes said. The van, which was still in motion, crashed into a tree and the carjacker ran away.

military, some (not all) police undergo a lot of training under stress, so proper reactions and following orders becomes second nature. That is not the case for you and me, or most of us. And that makes us far more dangerous when armed, even to ourselves and loved ones, than if we were not armed.

Conceal carry laws are horrible. an accident waiting to happen.

I know of a fair number of police officers, and personally know several Marines, who compete in civilian IPSC/IDPA/USPSA shooting competition to get precisely that aspect of training that they don't get much of in their "official" training, for budgetary reasons. (And for those who own guns for defensive purposes who have never shot that type of match against the clock, I highly recommend it.)

CHL licensure has been quite successful in the 47 states that have adopted it (you don't need a license in order to lawfully carry in Vermont, and Illinois and Wisconsin have no CCW provisions). Around 35 of those states issue according to statuatory requirements, with the rest being various shades of discretionary.

Carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle can get you in a lot of trouble.

Carjackers are not wearing seat belts. If you're smart, you are. They will get hurt. You won't.

At the very least, he'll get out and run if the air bag deploys and saves his worthless ass.

The guy wasn't just carjacked, he was ordered to drive off... essentially kidnapped. Can't say I would do the same thing under the circumstances.

The convention wisdom is "once you get in the car you're dead". Meaning that if a person gets control of you with a gun in a car, then he is going to the middle of nowhere to get rid of your body.

I'm sorry. I know this is tragic, and I hope the catch the thug and he recovers quickly and completely. But for some strange reason, I had to snicker when I read this. What the hell did he think he was going to do with a stun gun...besides piss the guy off??

Could I have the presence of mind to do whatever it took to survive?
I don't know. I'd like to fulfill my heroic self image and assume I would, thus freeing me to give all sorts of sage advice, but I've seen too many really alive, vibrant, handle anything people who did not.
