Please give me an update on the race against Sen. Shameless and the one to

replace the governor. Are people starting to pay attention to these races yet? Who's covering state races best online?

Rand Knight sounds too good and too progressive to be true, but it would be wonderful if he could win Saxby's Senate seat. After reading his web site, I'm impressed with his qualifications and his stands on the issues.

Has there ever been a U.S. Senator with a Ph.D.?

That would be such a surprise for those who think we're all slack-jawed, inbred racists down here.

1. Rand Knight -- does anyone know anything about him?
He must have some marketing folks working for him - because he's on Google ads, for one thing. I'm not sure what I was reading in gmail, but saw the link and went to his site. He sure does sound good -- but I've heard NOTHING about him in the local media.

Anyone here know anything about him? We need a progressive to get Porky Chambliss out of office!

8. Saw him Speak last Saturday
He and Vernon Jones spoke at the NFD breakfast on Saturday. He has been getting endorsements from all over the state. Jim Martin and Dale Caldwell did not show up to the event and probably lost some key endorsements.

6. New Poll Shows Martin Leading Jones, Others in U.S. Senate Primary
Broad Statewide Base, Personal Popularity Have Martin Well-Positioned to Win Democratic Nomination and Face Chambliss in the Fall

ATLANTA, June 5, 2008 - New polling shows Jim Martin, a former leader in the Georgia Legislature and 2006 Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor, leading the five-way field in his race to become the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate and take on incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss in November. Martin is ahead of his closest rival, DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones, by 5 points, 21% to 16%, with all other candidates in single digits.

In addition to being in the lead, the poll shows Martin is the most popular candidate in the race and is equally well-known and well-liked in every region of the state.

7. a great website for learning about state elections
http://www.politics1.com/ga.htm

This website shows all the races being held in every state and even provides weblinks for every candidate on the ballot. Dale Cardwell and Jim Martin are the only candidates I have met in person and both would make excellent opponents against Senator Shameliss.

I am currently leaning in favor of Dale Cardwell. He speaks his mind and doesn't take timid positions on bringing home the troops or supporting universal healthcare.

The state primary is on July 15, giving me just two weeks to make up my mind. Primaries can be tough!

11. Jones and Martin in runoff
The runoff is to be on August 5th I believe. This morning, I heard on local NPR that three of the candidates (Cardwell, Knight and another one) endorsed Martin. The report also said Jones took 40%, with Martin getting 34% (the other 3 who are endorsing him collected around 25% according to the report).

I intend to vote for Martin in the runoff. I've lived in DeKalb County and Jones has been effective, but also polarizing. Regardless, I will of course vote for whomever is the nominee this fall.

13. Vernon Jones
By way of introduction, I have been a Clinton advocate who is truly trying to get excited about Obama, up to now with little encouragement from him or his supporters. I am a Democrat, so I will probably get there, but getting enthusiastic is a little much to ask of me.

I have never found anything worthwhile about Vernon Jones and have no intention of voting for him in the Democratic runoff. If he wins it, I will simply not vote in the election because I cannot vote for him or Chambliss, Bush supporters and idiots of the first order with no better choice between them.

So before we moved to Newnan last year, I lived in Clayton County and every election I got campaign literature through the mail encouraging me to vote the "black slate" and listing the candidates. I haven't gotten those mailings since in Coweta County, and don't know if they are targeted to predominately African-American areas or just places with Democratic majorities. So I don't know.
So imagine my surprise when today I got a flyer from Vernon Jones, encouraging me to support him in the August 5 runoff. The flyer has a picture of former Senators Brooks and Mosely-Braun, and pictures of "Barack Obama, Junior"- present US Senator, and Vernon Jones "with your help".

It reads "Let's Make History in Georgia! vote for Barack Obama US President and Vernon Jones US Senator. Let's Make it a 2-for-1!"

IF our state was in fact full of "slack-jawed, inbred racists" this doesn't look good. In fact, when you consider it is JONES who supported the candidate George Bush TWICE, what is he saying?

I am offended. It ain't helping Obama with me. Nothing will help Jones with me. Just needed to rant, and hope somebody involved in Obama's campaign in Georgia will get Jones to stop this mess!

14. The Obama campaign has already asked VJ once to stop using his picture
It implies and endorsement and they have tried to distance themselves as much as possible from Jones. I think VJ needs to get a cease and desist letter from Obama's lawyers.

But I guess he figures, hey it worked the first time - let me hoodwink all those black folks one more time. I can't stand Vernon Jones and I too will leave that spot blank if he somehow wins on Tuesday.
