Cobb bar protested as racist for Obama T-shirts
Mulligan's selling shirts with 'Curious George' picture

By CHRISTIAN BOONE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/13/08

Marietta tavern owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" scrolled underneath, are "cute." But to a coalition of critics, the shirts are an insulting exploitation of racial stereotypes from generations past.

"It's time to put an end to this," said Rich Pellegrino, a Mableton resident and director of the Cobb-Cherokee Immigrant Alliance. It was among the organizations planning to gather outside Mulligan's Bar and Grill Tuesday afternoon to protest the "racist and highly offensive" shirts.

"There's no place for these views, not in this day and age," he said.

Just down the street from Marietta's famous Big Chicken, Mulligan's has carved a provocative niche in an increasingly multicultural area, thanks to its owner's ultra-conservative political views. If you live in Marietta, it's impossible not to know what's on Norman's mind, as he posts his views on signs in front of Mulligan's.

1. We have Teeshirts of Bush looking like a chimp.
I don't like the Obama/Curious George thing, but I respect his right to sell it. 1st Amendment right, ya know?

6. Uh. No. Not the same point.
This is Georgie looking like a chimp - an actual real life chimp:

or this

or this

or this

This is Curious George:

And this is the t-shirt in question:

Which one is more similar to the image in the t-shirt? The real life chimp or the Curious George? If you can't see that it is a clear theft on an intellectual property, then may I suggest LensCrafters?

13. You can joke all you want, but you are the one being obtuse (as you are so wont to accuse others of)
This dumbass is stealing someone else's work and passing it off as his to make a buck. He's a common petty thief and now the company that owns Curious George is contemplating suing him and I hope they sue him right out of business. Let's see how he likes going up against another businessman (or several in this case with lots and lots of lawyers).

14. What you are failing to see, is that the more fuss that is made over this
makes it worse. And look at it this way: Pretend that Curious George was the invention of the guy selling the Obama '08 Teeshirts. Then, wouldn't you agree that it would be his right to sell the Teeshirts? So, since the Curious George is a copyrighted piece of material, then let the owners of Curious George sue him if they want to. But you are just making it worse by being obtuse and making a big fuss. You draw more attention to it than it deserves.
Don't give the racists the satisfaction of getting your goat, ignore it. Obama does.

15. The OP was simply saying to avoid that place--not to give that man any business
But apparently you have a problem with it. Curious indeed.

7. This is Democratic Underground
not Non-Partisan Underground. If you want to respect racists and intellectual theft, that's up to you. The 1st Amendment, y'know.

9. I work in Marietta not too far from Mulligan's.
I think I have been there for lunch at one time or another. But I guess I won't be returning now.
