DU'ers from Georgia...please tell me more about your state...
because I would like to learn more about it....

I lived in Florida ( hell-hole ) some years back...and I was driving back home to Pennsylvania. Going through that state, some of the places I stopped at were very inviting, and the people made you feel very welcome there. You have one hell of a beautiful state, and a lot to be proud of! I suppose I could google it, I know...but I would like to hear opinions here one DU. I had a great time going through there...almost felt like I belonged there ( It's weird, that's all I can say ).

1. What sort of quality of life and community interest are you looking for?
I've lived n Georgia my entire life. From a native - there are huge differences in community "look and feel" even inside the perimeter. Where I live is radically different from the neighborhood I used to call home just three miles north from here. They're both just as walkable but the racial/economic demographic mix plus the choice of where to buy basic necessities diverge greatly.

The town where I was raised might as well be located on Mars when compared to similarly sized towns where extended family members live.

So where did you pass through? What sort of community are you looking for?

2. I moved back to Georgia after having lived in North Carolina
for 25 years, and the thing that struck me was how much friendlier the people are in this state than anywhere else I've ever been. I dearly loved North Carolina, and still feel very connected to the NC High Country, but the folks there were a bit clannish and distrusting of outsiders. The locals wanted the tourist dollars but didn't want the tourists. Georgians, however seem eager to welcome newcomers and have the true rule on southern hospitality.

I lived in Macon for about 12 (that town has a spell over it, I swear), and Atlanta for about 4 years (loved it then--1973, but can't stand to drive through now). Now I live in Northwest Georgia, and even though there are some things I hate, like bugs, heat, drought, poverty, Confederacy worship and narrowmindedness, it is a beautiful area in the foothills of the Southern Appalachian mtns., with rolling hills, beautiful old farmland, (mostly) goodhearted people. I know this is painting with a broad brush, but these are my impressions from living in and visiting Georgia for most of my life.

3. I moved here to the metro Atlanta area in 1989
from that hellhole of the South, Florida. I grew up in Miami and never realized that there were actually 4 seasons. I always thought there was perpetual summer and spring. I live just northwest of Atlanta in Woodstock. Even though it is a totally red area, I love it here. And I think it is less expensive in Georgia than anywhere else in the US.
