Rural, white Republicans that I know are expressing fear of civil unrest if Obama doesn't win.
I think that this is a big fear of these conservative, rural white Georgia voters (they would have been Dixiecrats in the past) who are racist (but not openly so in mixed company but are openly so among other whites) and are terrified of an Obama presidency.

I wonder if local conservative talk radio hosts or conservative churches and social groups are spreading this civil unrest "rumour."

The woman that I work with who expressed the civil unrest fear is younger than me! (early 40s). Her child will grow up with predjudice as well. It is sad that this attitude is still prevalent in generation after generation here in the Deep South. She is not a wealthy person. She is a middle class, high school graduate and single parent. She votes against her own economic best self-interest year after year.
:(

What have y'all heard about these rumours?

1. They've talked about those on NPR
over the past few weeks. Don't know of any local churches, but I'd be willing to bet that RW squawk radio is making a big deal. I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't tell me about it.

I wish that they'd make up their minds. Either all black people are going to riot if Obama wins, or all black people are going to riot if Obama doesn't win. Since they seem to think that all black people are going to riot, anyway, that means that they understand the racial caste system and their place in it--and who's been on the bottom. They're terrified that dreaded concept of "payback". :hide:

With these rumors flying about, there really isn't a great deal to cheer about, IMO. The next generation is being indoctrinated to racism and not to vote in their best interests as their sheet-wearing, Confederate battle flag waving parents and grandparents have been. If Obama wasn't the "black guy with the funny name" (his words), this election wouldn't be as close as it is. Regardless of the outcome, we're far from "beyond race".

Segregation came off of American walls, but not off of American hearts. As much as things change, they same the same. :(

2. Thanks for the reply.
You are right: I think that these conservative, rural whites may be afraid of "payback" no matter what the election result is.

Thom Hartman thinks the rumour of riots is a GOP-R/W talking point (to rally low-information racist voters).

Hopefully, these voters will prosper under an Obama-Biden administration and maybe Obama's words and actions will change their hearts and minds!

3. Hey Cottonbear
Haven't heard any rumors in Alpharetta yet. I'll walk the neighborhood this afternoon and see if I can get a handle on the feeling in North Fulton.

People just continue to amaze and disappoint me!

4. Hi Deb!

The woman that I spoke with lives in rural (mostly white) Oglethorpe County adjacent to A-CC. Most of the upscale, white conservatives here in Athens-Clarke County would probably never actually say what she said but they might be thinking it.

:hi: How are your horses? My mare, Cotton, is fat and sassy!

5. Rowan is great!
Thanks for asking. We are headed to Special Olympics in Perry this weekend with 9 students and 5 horses! We are very excited.

9. No rioting planned in my Alpharetta neighborhood
but I might shoot my gun into the dirt when McCain concedes...

6. I don't know about the black people in C-town, but I've sharpened my pitchfork tines just in case
I want to be ready at a moment's notice! :)

While we have the majority and can shove things through, I'd love for them to outlaw RW radio. I'd also like for Boortz's citizenship to be revoked and him kicked out of the US.

7. Since Boortz has done nothing to help
and since he doesn't like the idea of the repubs being voted out, he and his fellow RW hate radio friends can go somewhere where their views will be appreciated--like Iran.

I suppose that the rural white voters are scared shitless if they believe this riot rumour. They should feel really bad about having voted for Bush twice so he and the GOP could run the country into the ground.

10. The Fire and Police departments in Chicago were told to expect civil unrest if Obama lost.
