Mufi or Duke? Who should I vote for?
I've only been here a few years so I am bit clueless on this one.
I know Mufi's name is a blatent attempt to exploit localism. Did Duke change his name to "Duke" to better capture the surfer vote?

Help straighten me out.

1. It's not Mufi's name that's a blatant attempt to exploit localism

it's the slogan "Our Home. Our Mayor.", coupled with shenanigans like this:

that are a blatant attempt to exploit localism.

Hannemann's true and actual name is "Muliufi". True story: When he played center for Harvard's basketball team, the P.A. announcer at Brown couldn't handle "Muliufi" and so resorted to saying "Basket by... Hannemann". The announcer? Chris Berman. Fo' real!

As for Duke, he appears to have acquired the nickname from his fellow medical residents:

Is Duke his real name? Yes.

Duke was born Mark Edmund Bainum, but was given the nickname "Duke" by fellow interns at Queen’s Medical Center during the intense period of his surgical residency. The name stuck and Duke had it legalized in 1987.

Inasmuch as my given name is Mark, I really should consider switching from him, just because he changed his name from Mark :-)

What's in a name? Not that much. I'm for Bainum because a) he patiently sat in his council office for forty-five minutes while my former employer ran his mouth non-stop about his alleged business plan; and b) more importantly, Mufi's a weenie. I tried to find the picture of him with Ronald Reagan :puke: that he puts in his own flyers but could not.

Edit: What would be a "blatant attempt top exlpoit localism"?

2. I should have turned the sarcasm alert on.
I was kidding about the names. But thanks for the heads up post. I didn't realize Duke really did change his name nor that Mufi wasn't using his original.

I missed the reg deadline for the primaries, but I'm on the general.

6. I saw that story on TV.
Call me paranoid, but the first thing I thought of was the Duke campaign set that up. It had nothing to do with Duke, but just looked convenient to have that on film.

Too much Rove I guess.

12. The vandalism continues on Dukes signs. One man had his signs defaced
4 times in 3 months. He decided not to let the Bianum people replace that last set which were destroyed by fire.

7. To me, IMHO, the odds are for Duke to do the better job, to think for the
people more than not/

Mufi, I have heard some rather discouraging stories....

My gut feeling is for the Duke.

8. Muffy is a gay hating mormon.
Nuff said.

He is scum. Always has been.

A serious no-good bigot.

I'm surprised he hasn't vanished back into his cockroach hole.

He's tried to run on almost every island - and has failed each time last I looked.

9. Many of Hanneman's
followers are also supporters and financial backers of the uberhomophobe Mike Gabbard.

10. So far, 5 - 0 DUKE, on the DU Mayoral posting poll.
That just about does it for me. Hawaii newbie, here, but how does Mufi get to be a Democrat if he's got all that bad stuff on him?

11. You're kidding. He's registered as a Democrat this time?
I thought he ran as a repuke the last times he ran.

Not only is he a bigot - but he's an opportunist, too.

Shameless.
