This slam poetry contest will feature some of Hawai'is most talented
slam poets both on the national and local level. Hosted by Travis T.,

won two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and named comedian of the year. Nalani

First Friday Event – Arts at marks garage, 6pm

On every first Friday of the month, the sun goes down and art night
crawlers roam Downtown/ Chinatown to glimpse the latest chic art
before they hit the downtown bars for jazzy music and trendy
cocktails. The April 1st First Friday offers the same gallery walk,
but with a special event at the ARTS at Marks Garage featuring the
Right to Know artist reception with DJ Spychedelic as spin whiz.

If that’s not enough, and to go out with a bang and not a whimper, the
Freedom of Information Project will host a reading/ discussion
featuring renowned UH Manoa Professor and author (Aloha Betrayed, Duke
University Press) Noenoe Silva at 6:00pm. Come armed with opinion, a
sense of fun and an open mind because First Friday is about to be
taken hostage with the voices of revolution.

Join these visionaries in conversing on the future of
media and politics.

In a time of a multitude of media outlets
dissimulating a massive amount of information, we have
to ask, what is the Truth? And who is telling the
Truth? In a provocative dialogue session The Art of
Truth: A dialogue on the Future of Media and Politics,
cutting edge filmmakers, public servants, journalists,
and professors Ð all who have the pulse of the world
in their fists Ð will be talking openly and candidly
about manufactured realities and the future of media
and politics. These truth-makers and truth-seekers are
visionaries, slamming mainstream truths with the might
of seasoned professionalism.

Merita Mita Ð acclaimed producer and director of such
films as SPOOKED, HOTERE, and PATU, is currently
teaching 'From Oral Tradition to Screenplay' and
'Indigenous Aesthetics' at the Academy for Creative
Media at the University of Hawai'i, Manoa. Danny
Schechter is an Emmy Award winning filmmaker, author,
journalist and founder of Globalvision and
MediaChannel.org. Many of his films have been featured
on PBS and on stations around the world.Ê Maile S.L.
Shimabukuro is Hawaii State Representative for the
45th District, a Supervisory Attorney at The Legal Aid
society of HI Ð Wai'anae Branch and a reporter for The
Leeward Coaster. Keali'iÊ S. Lopez is President and
CEO of 'Olelo Community Television. She was past
President of the Board at Pacific Islanders in
Communication, served on the Nanakuli Neighborhood
Housing Association, and was Director of community
programming at Oceanic. Ruth HsuÊ is Associate
Professor of English at UHM and co founder of the
University Peace Initiative.

Danny Schechter is a television producer and
independent filmmaker who also writes and speaks about
media issues. He is the author of "Falun Gong's
Challenge to China" (Akashic Press), "The More You
Watch, The Less You Know" (Seven Stories Press) and
"News Dissector: Passions, Pieces and Polemics"
(Electron Press). He is the executive editor of the
MediaChannel.org, the world's largest online media
issues network. Schechter is co-founder and executive
producer of Globalvision, a New York-based television
and film production company now in its 13th year,
where he produced 156 editions of the award-winning
series South Africa Now, co-produced Rights & Wrongs:
Human Rights Television with Charlayne Hunter-Gault.
His most recent human rights production,
"Globalization and Human Rights was co-produced with
Rory O'Connor and shown nationally on PBS. He is a
previous producer for CNN and 20/20.
