What is Coeur d'Alene like politically?
My dream is to move there - but I'm afraid it will be too right wing. I heard they got rid of the Arian Nation - so I'm hoping the crazy right wingers are gone. I'm sure there are some greedy right wingers there - are there any progressives? I heard it was an artists community - so that makes me think there are some lefty types there. Can anyone give me some info?

1. Coeur d'Alene Is One of the Most Beautiful Places I've Ever Seen
but I haven't been there since the late '70s - and then as a mere tourist. I didn't even consider Aryan groups back then, but according to what I've read since they were active in the background. Nearly 30 years have elapsed, so it's likely that the area has received a good many immigrants from California - among other places.

Some articles found from a Google search:

This one from July, 1999

An article that holds out hope that the city council has some sensibility

http://stop-the-hate.org/idaho.html

'Christian Identity' groups in the region as a whole

http://www.rickross.com/reference/aryan/aryan40.html

Some good news as former Aryan property gets better use

From appearances, these groups would appear not to wield quite as much influence as in the past.

2. Coeur d'Alene is very right wing
another bad point is the lake and other water bodies in the area are almost dead, tough now recovering, due to hundreds of years of mining pollutants. The area has been the object of a Superfund cleanup for a couple of decades.
If you want a liberal town try Sandpoint.

4. More middle of the road...
I say that Orange County Calf. is more conservative than Coeur d'Alene, but Sandpoint is defiantly left-er...

I'm 20 minutes from Sandpoint and drive to Coeur d'Alene all the time...

5. Come on in the water's fine...
Moved to N. Idaho 3 years ago. Check out Sandpoint, ID 1 hour north and not nearly as congested. It's true that there are a lot of Conservatives here but there are a lot of Libertarians, Progressive and others who flat out don't "do" politics at all. We're talkin' "off the grid" types. The nazi's are mostly gone from what I know, but again there are radicals everywhere. Certainly there is the occasional asshole (who you merely ignore) but I've lived in communities in S. Calf. that are the same or worse...

Check this thread from a member in Mass. If you wear it on your sleeve 24/7 you'll attract attention not all of which is positive.

People pretty much mind their business.

And it is an amazing place! And there a re a lot of Californian moving here too.
