Big Jim Thompson, another dirty Republican?
Looks liker the GOP 9-11 hit man should have been exposed earlier. I guess when you're in bed with the neo-cons you think you are above the law. Maybe that would be a rush to judgment, but since his law firm is defending former Governor Ryan pro bono (you know those GOPers can't afford a good lawyer) I don't have a lot of faith in his integrity.
Snip>The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission warned former Gov. Jim Thompson and two others they could be sued because of their conduct as directors of Hollinger International, which owns the Chicago Sun-Times, sources familiar with the matter said.
Thompson, Richard Burt and Marie-Josee Kravis received "Wells notices" from the SEC last month, Bloomberg News reported and another source confirmed. A Wells notice alerts the recipient that the SEC has enough evidence to bring a civil lawsuit against the individual, which could result in fines and a lifetime ban from serving as a director at any public company.<snip

1. There is something else floating out there on Thompson.
Even the most conservative folks see it. Check this out:

Snip...

"Big Jim Thompson did Dr. Keyes a big favor, by not endorsing him. Why would Keyes want to be associated with this trick bag? Thompson is the reason why the people should vote for Alan Keyes. To show the rest of the country that we will not put up with the corruption that these three stooges have been perpetuating on the People of Illinois for years.

Big Jim Thompson, Illinois longest serving Governor; 14 years, that's a long time to make connections, and that's a long time to construct an oligarchy with corrupt tentacles to stretch into every facet of our lives, and suppress our pursuit of happiness.

Big Jim was picked to replace Henry Kissinger as head of the 9 -11 Commission, because Henry's business dealings gave him a conflict of interest to investigate the same companies that he owned, which were destroyed in the World Trade Center on 9 -11.

So Big Jim stepped up and was hand picked amongst the other Commission members carrying political baggage to "white wash" their findings and cover up for the government.

Big Jim's latest project as chairman of the Winston & Strawn Law Firm was in charge of "The Audit Committee," of Hollinger International, where Conrad Black and David Radler allegedly fleeced the company out of over four million dollars, while Big Jim Thompson looked the other way. This crime fighter who claimed he could have spotted crooks at a distance, as he rose to fame as the United States Attorney who ridiculed former Illinois Governor and Federal Appellate Judge, Otto Kerner, into a perjury charge for accepting bribes, is now pleading stupidity as he was questioned by Richard Breeden, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Breeden didn't accuse Big Jim of doing anything illegal, but he made Thompson look ridiculous. Wow, how offensive is that, to gain the peoples confidence of the guy who headed the 9 -11 Commission. Did he look the other way there too?"

snip...

That entire snippet is incredibly delicious given the fact that the quoted stuff is extracted from a pro Keyes article written by a the guy who hosts The Angry White Male Hour on Chicago radio.

I love to watch the GOP savage each other.

3. Thompson set the model for "pay to play"
which has afflicted both parties in Illinois.

4. I don't know about that.
What about Daley the 1st? And I'm sure he was following someone else's footsteps, as you write, that's Illinois. I just thought maybe he was smarter, this is actually a result of post politics for him. although I'm sure he keeps a hand in the game. I'm not surprised he has enemies on both sides since he curried favor with both sides also. I think Daley the 2nd is actually more modeled after Big Jim in that he'll play the bi-partisan game. I actually felt Big Jim was more partisan in his 9-11 role since he could afford to be, I hadn't really thought that he might be paid to be.
