Prosecutor: Mom of raped teen took $10,000 hush money

January 13, 2006

BY JOE HOSEY

A Wilmington woman took $10,000 to cover up the crime of a man who repeatedly raped her disabled teenage daughter for months, Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said Thursday.

"I've been doing this for 28 years, and I've never come across a case with allegations of this nature," Glasgow said after announcing the charges against Kimberly Riordan.

Riordan, 32, reportedly retained a twice-convicted sex offender to baby-sit her quadriplegic daughter, who suffers from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair.

The suspect, Larry Lee Southwood, 68, of Wilmington Township, raped the 14-year-old for the nine months leading up to his arrest Christmas Day, police said.

Southwood paid Riordan $10,000 to keep her from ratting him out to the cops, and she went along with the deal, lying to Detective Sgt. David Margliano, Glasgow said.

6. A response like yours only worsens the situation and adds to
the harm done.

The mother is a very sick, twisted, vile woman. But you do nothing but make things worse by referring to her with a sexist term and advocating vigilante justice against her. IOW, your response is every bit as misogynist -- as woman-hating and as promoting of woman-hating -- as this woman's treeatment of her own daughter in the first place.

As repulsed as I am by the story itself, I am even more repulsed by your response.

8. I stand by my original post...that poor girl was as
defenceless as any soul could be...in order for evil to exist it takes a willing host...that woman and that pedophile deserve no consideration...i said that about Eichmann, Stalin, Bundy.etc...however if you wish to shed tears and feel as if I somehow excacerbated the situation, then I guess we'll just have to disagree...how dare you not to consider the victim here...it's not the mother or that P.O.S pedophile...it's a 14 year old..I'm no the bad guy here...:wtf:

2. How many famous musicians and athletes do the same thing?

Multiply it by a thousand, have your lawyers call it a negotiated settlement to a civil suit, and the prosecutors wink an eye (or exhale deeply in gratitude that their departments don't have to engage in an expensive civil trial they know will end in acquittal) and they drop the criminal charges, and, voila, it's not wrong.

7. There's one that was in the news in last couple years that was very big.
And I suspect it happens often without the police even knowing enough to start an investigation.
